The creator of National Geographic's popular Blue Zones—now a documentary on Netflix—brings readers a beautifully illustrated and informative guide to the places on Earth where people live the longest—including lessons learned, top longevity foods, and the behaviors to help you live to 100—plus a surprising new blue zone.

National Geographic Explorer and best-selling author Dan Buettner has traveled the globe to uncover the best strategies for longevity, which he found in the blue zones: places around the world where higher percentages of people enjoy remarkably long, full lives.

In
The Blue Zones Secrets for Living Longer, Buettner returns to Sardinia, Italy; Ikaria, Greece; Okinawa, Japan; Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula; and Loma Linda, California to check in on the super-agers living in the blue zones and interprets the not-so-secret sauce of purpose, faith, community, down-time, natural movement, and plant-based eating that has powered as many as 10 additional years of healthy living in these regions. And Buettner reveals an all-new blue zone—the first man-made blue zone yet explored.

Throughout his two decades of research, Buettner has worked with some of National Geographic's top photographers—including David McLain and Gianluca Cola—to document the healthy habits of the world's longest living communities. In this informative collection, their work punctuates Buettner's lively text, offering a beautiful tour of the blue zones.

Dan Buettner is an explorer, National Geographic Fellow, award-winning journalist and producer, and New York Times bestselling author. He discovered the five places in the world – dubbed blue zones hotspots – where people live the longest, healthiest lives. His articles about these places in The New York Times Magazine and National Geographic are two of the most popular for both publications.

Buettner now works in partnership with municipal governments, large employers, and health insurance companies to implement Blue Zones Projects in communities, workplaces, and universities. Blue Zones Projects are well-being initiatives that apply lessons from the Blue Zones to entire communities by focusing on changes to the local environment, public policy, and social networks. The program has dramatically improved the health of more than 5 million Americans to date.

His new book “The Blue Zones Challenge: A 4-Week Plan for a Longer Better Life” is a four-week guide and year-long sustainability program to jump-start your journey to better health, happiness, less stress, and longer life.

Buettner also holds three Guinness World Records in distance cycling.

The Blue Zones Secrets for Living Longer: Lessons from the Healthiest Places on Earth is not only a tool for someone who wants to live longer. It’s a guide for someone who wants to live better… today. This book is a guide for your future that, if you’re ready, starts today. The Blue Zones Secrets for Living Longer: Lessons from the Healthiest Places on Earth starts by dispelling many common assumptions about what it means to be healthy (i.e., fad diets; join a gym; take your supplements) and explains (with evidence) why those are misguided and/or wrong. The book then quickly jumps into the lessons from the healthiest places on earth. The lessons are many and varied and told with ease. Often the lessons come in story-form, making them entertaining to read and easy to understand. Some lessons are intuitive and common sense but others are more subtle, less obvious, but still important to incorporate into everyday life. Each and every lesson is accompanied by stunning pictures taken by a National Geographic photographer. There’s a lot to unpack in here but let’s be clear: This isn’t one man’s opinion. This is reporting at the highest level with facts verified and conclusions quantified with the help of many, many experts (doctors, epidemiologists, anthropologists, etc.)In my opinion, The Blue Zones Secrets for Living Longer: Lessons from the Healthiest Places on Earth is really evidence-based wisdom. The Blue Zones Secrets for Living Longer: Lessons from the Healthiest Places on Earth is neatly arranged into two sections. Section One (pages 1-207) is about how the people in the different Blue Zones out there (Sardinia, Nicoya, Loma Linda, Ikaria, Okinawa, Singapore) live. Yes, there is plenty of overlap in how they approach life but there’s also a lot of differences that are unique to each culture. What’s nice about learning about the different cultures is that it’s clear there’s more than one path to living to 100. Once you know what works in the different Blue Zones out there, you will know what habits and patterns and environments might work for your family.Section Two (pages 208-274) is a how-to manual with clear instructions on how to implement sustainable changes to your environment, diet, social circle, lifestyle, etc. These are not quick fixes. Section Two is titled “Building Your Blue Zone” and points you toward steps you can take for your own life (i.e. Move naturally; live with purpose, the plant slant; etc.) to help you live better and longer.I can honestly say The Blue Zones Secrets for Living Longer: Lessons from the Healthiest Places on Earth has changed life for my family of four - our environment, our daily routine, our diet, our friend circle. While I’m optimistic these lessons are adding years to all of our lives, it’s also making sure the years we have better.

This well researched and written book is great for expanding your understanding of people who's lifestyles have proven a longer and healthier lifespan. Dan Buettner brings you with him as he meets and learns from folks who live long healthy lives. The book contains specific information we can use to improve our quality of life through foods, and lifestyle advice. The suggestion don't come from scientific studies using double blind experimentation, so use your judgement. For example, In the Sardinian Blue zone, people drink wine with a meal every day. There are many things these folks do that lead to long lives, so my question to consider is, would these people live even longer if they drank less wine? Is their walking five miles a day more important than the wine or other diet formulas. All in all, it is a great interesting read that will stir your imagination.

Who would believe those places would have more Centenarians than any other places in the world? And why? Dan Buettner, a lovely, likable human being, just past the halfway mark of his subjects, takes you inside the lives of gentle people in Okinawa, Greece, Sardinia, Costa Rica, and surprisingly, a town in California. No mind-bending secrets. It's mainly common sense. Sensible diet--more plant-based. More walking than riding. A little praying doesn't hurt. And best of all, the awareness of family and friends. All goals accessible to All of us. I "zone" in (not out) when I make healthy choices that make me happy to live a longer, happier life. Read and learn. Salud! J. Flaherty, Author/Speaker

Good information and some good ideas

There is a lot of repetitive information in each chapter and between each chapter

But worth a read

Really enjoyed this book (and the documentary). Thank you, Dan Buettner, for your work. What else can I say except that this has been life-changing? I've implemented many things I've learned, and look forward to implementing even more in the future. I love my new Blue Zone way of life; I think about it daily, I am inspired by it daily, and I will be forever grateful.

I love sitting on the floor, I love my grain bowls, I look forward to gardening more, I focus more on moving naturally instead of exercising, I respect tradition more, I'll (fine!) live near my parents. The list goes on. Finally, here is a clear route to more health and happiness. Tried and true. Natural, intuitive. REAL.

The photographs were beautiful and interesting. What is that saying? A picture speaks a thousand words? I enjoyed looking at them and getting inspiration from my centenarians. MY. I guess I love them. They've helped me so much.

Many blessings, Dan. Bravo

As in this author's other Blue Zones books, this one is written and photographed as if you are on a personal tour of those zones, meeting, cooking, and eating with them. It's far more encouraging than just a "Mediterranean" style cookbook and makes a great "coffee table" conversation piece, especially if you want to introduce this eating concept to others. Some of the recipes are very different than you might want to try, but you can be pleasantly surprised when you do !

Have had quick look and its impressive. We both saw the Netflix series, mind blowing. So many things rang a bell. This guy knows his stuff. I was already a believer in an alternative living style, so my friends say. I also knew about the Greek (low industrial) vs Japan (high industrial) comparison, where both offer brill life expectancy. Food plays a big part but also lifestyle/attitude. So, its fish and relaxed peaceful island life for me (normally called holidays). We had to buy the book, my wife's working through it, my turn next. Before you think I'm paid to sell this, the answer is no. I just hate junk food, all the additives to make you eat the wrong stuff and the threat to long life and good health. Great piece of work, thanks Dan.
