This book has a wealth of information on the Presidents, Vice-Presidents, cabinet members, elections, and major issues dealt with in each administration. For example, Martin Van Buren's vice-president, Richard Johnson, who served from 1837-1841, was very controversial because he had taken a slave as a common-law wife and raised their children as free persons. This is one of the finest one volume sources on Presidential administrations.

However, the 7th edition, published in 2009, contains major errors concerning the administration of George W. Bush. For Secretary of Agriculture, it mentions only that Mike Johanns was nominated in 2004. It fails to mention that he served from 2005-2007, and that he was succeeded by Ed Schafer, who served from from 2008-2009.

For Secretary of Commerce, it mentions that Carlos Gutierrez was nominated in 2004, but fails to mention that he served from 2005-2009.

For Secretary of Housing & Urban Development, it mentions that Alphonso Jackson served from 2004-2009. However, that is incorrect. Mr. Jackson left in 2008, and was succeeded by Steve Preston, who served from from 2008-2009.

For Secretary of Transportation, the book inaccurately states that Norman Pineta was the Secretary from 2001-2009. In fact, he left in 2006, and was succeeded by Mary Peters, who served from 2006-2009.

For Secretary of Energy, it states that Samuel Bodman was nominated in 2004, but fails to mention that he served from 2005-2009.

For Secretary of Education, it states that Margaret Spellings was nominated in 2004, but fails to mention that she served from 2005-2009.

Finally, for Secretary of Veterans Affairs, it inaccurately states that Jim Nicholson was Secretary from 2005-2009.

This book, over 800 pages in length, is undoubtedly the most complete one-volume collection of facts -- essential and trivial -- on the U.S. presidents available. It even provides biographical background on the candidates who failed to win the presidency. It is very fair and balanced, unlike "The Presidents Fact Book" by Roger Matuz which has marvelous illustrations but is decidedly biased in an arch-conservative fashion.

Once upon a time, this book was the standard for Presidential fact books. The write-ups on each President were even-handed, the sections on what others thought about each President were even on each side. Certainly, the weaknesses of each President were explored, but the strengths were also presented. This is still true in the sections that were written in the original edition. Unfortunately, Mr. Digregorio has been supplemented by other authors who don't seem capable of the same even-handed factual approach. The bias is heavily liberal in the last few editions, and it gets worse every edition. In the "What others said" portion of George W. Bush, for instance, the negative comments get four times as much space. Even Buchanan, universally acknowledged as the worst President, gets more favorable coverage. And when the only thing the author can say about Sarah Palin is that "she can dress a moose", and completely overlook the fact that her huge popularity among conservatives made the 2008 election much closer than it would have been, is evidence enough that the recent authors can't be unbiased and show both sides.

It is sad when a once great book deteriorates. Get the first couple of editions and forget this one.
