The index is a little challenging because the author goes to lengths to preserve recipes' original names. That means that from one page to another the recipe names might switch between English, French and Spanish, and the book isn't indexed by country. Unfortunately you'll need to have an idea of what you're looking for to find a recipe in this book—as another review mentioned, this is cooking you grew up with. If you didn't, this isn't terribly accessible as an introduction to Caribbean cooking; it wouldn't make a great gift for someone who is interested in a primer unless they're ready to dive DEEP. If they are, and are ready to create a whole storehouse of childhood memories of this food for themselves, then look no further.
