Editorial Reviews
Review
"A bible for accompanists/ collaborators!"--Marilyn Horne
"This book is exactly like its author: brilliant, witty, passionate, practical, and utterly compelling. Every pianist will want to read it; every singer and instrumentalist who will ever collaborate with a pianist should mine its gems."--Dr. Alan L. Smith, Director of Keyboard Collaborative Arts,
University of Southern California, Thornton School of Music
"It comes as no surprise that our beloved Martin Katz has found yet another way to give greatness to the world of music, this time through his most wonderful book, guide, missal, The Complete Collaborator. His is a knowledge that comes from the heart, and this latest work reflects beautifully not
just his expertise but the passion behind it, the deep and true love of music and music making that has earned him the prestige, affection and respect of all of his fortunate "Collaboratees!"-- Frederica von Stade
"As to be expected, Martin Katz has given us a good and timely book, excellently written and useful in many ways. Highly recommended. " --Vladimir Feltsman
"The book's usefulness is augmented by a correlated website that offers over 100 recorded examples, including some which are performances of entire songs. Katz deftly demonstrates, with the aid of two singers, the skills that earn him accolades as a collaborative pianist...The knowledge will benefit
singers in their performances. For voice pedagogues...the information is invaluable, both in accompanying lessons and preparing studenst to work with pianists...HIghly recommended." --Journal of Singing

THE book for pianists who accompany (which is, frankly, almost all of us at some point or another). Philosophy, self-esteem, technicalities, and analysis are only the start of what Katz covers. If you a are a pianist, get this book and put it into practice right now; if you know a pianist, get this book for them to show them your love and respect; if you work with a pianist, it might not be a bad idea to get into your collaborative partner's head a little, as well, by getting this book… In short, a must-read for most anyone.

This is a well written book on the subject of accompanying and working with other musicians. I find it to be an enjoyable, easy read but still learned more about the subject.

Mixed feelings?! Certainly a great deal of relevant and valuable information. The author is legendary and his personality comes across in a helpful way. Hope he will write some more on the subject....maybe in larger print...maybe more balanced in Instrumental collaboration and in working with students. Every serious pianist should own this book.

This a wonderful book and should be required reading for pianists at every conservatory and university world wide! Martin Katz writes with great clarity and makes all of his points through perfectly chosen musical examples, which are expertly demonstrated in the online recordings.
Bravo! This is an essential buy for any professional pianist, student or interested amateur.

Very small and light text
Reviewed in Canada on March 8, 2020Verified Purchase
Unfortunately the printing of this book is of poor quality. The text is small and light, therefore it is very difficult to read. A book on accompanying, with so many musical examples, should be ring bound so that it lies flat. These problems make the book extremely difficult to read, and difficult to use at the keyboard. The content of the book is very good, as the author is extremely knowledgeable and experienced, but it is so difficult to read, I probably won't. Really disappointing.

Excelente livro

Este livro aborda o Piano Colaborador de maneira bastante completa e descritiva.
Num assunto de tão pouca bibliografia este livro faz enorme diferença.
Os arquivos em áudio também são de grande valia.
Recomendo.
