2008 fifteen CD set, the most complete anthology ever from the Italian master composer, released to coincide with the maestro's 80th birthday. This 15 disc set includes only original versions of his best works grouped into seven different categories, all selected by Morricone himself. The discs include: Music For Cinema (nine CDs containing 168 of his best themes in chronological order), Music For Television (two CDs containing 38 themes), Contemporary Classical Music (one CD containing 18 tracks), Original Songs (one CD containing 18 songs he composed for well-known Pop artists), Orchestral Arrangements (one CD containing 16 of his best arrangements) and Hit Song Arrangements (one CD containing 16 Pop hits he arranged in the '60s for Italian artists including rarities, remixes and more). Edel.

Recording is flawless.
First of all, all the titles are in Italian, so it's a bit tricky if you're not used to it.
Second, and more important, is the lack of a proper presentation. Each CD is in a paper sleeve. CD's are impossible to remove from sleeve without putting fingerprints all over the surface. For $110, I'd expect at least some kind of protective case.
if you are only superficially aware of his works, perhaps this is a bit much but, i don't think you will be disappointed if you purchase it anyway. there is a tremendous amount of music here for you to enjoy for a long long time. Morricone's work spans decades and genres. he creates music that is hauntingly beautiful, playful and often surprising. sure, not every piece is going to work for everyone but, those are the rare ones.
i'd also recommend his concert dvds (my favorite is Arena Concerto).
i've uploaded some photos of the set so you have a better idea of what you're getting. enjoy!
I have happily listened to a cd a day for 15 days and discovered a whole world of Morricone I never knew existed, and because the bulk of the set is film music arranged in chronological order I've also heard the progression of a master composer. Add to that the very clear and appealing design - with each digipack colour coded in a simple white cardboard box - and the use of remastered original recordings, and you have a really magnificent Morricone Redux.
I doubt anything so comprehensive will be surpassed, even if the flimsy booklet offers little apart from nice film posters and an introduction from the Maestro himself.
Amazon is currently charging full retail which suggests this limited edition is becoming less available, so my advice is grab it while you can. It's a box set you'll be proud to own and listen to either for extended periods or just when you feel like a shot of Morricone.
