About the Author

Theresa Karas Yianilos is of Greek parentage. She is reknowned for her expertise in cooking authentic Greek foods and has appeared in television and been written about in national magazines. She taught Greek cooking at the University of California at San Diego. She married Spero J. Yianilos. The family clan owned restaurants, commissaries and a confectionary factory in Buffalo and Tonawanda, New York and its environs. From all that experience, Mrs. Yianilos was able to blend old family Greek recipes with modern restaurant techniques that made her Greek cookbook a best seller. Theresa Yianilos is the author of two other books: Woman Marine, A Memoir (about her experiences as a Marine in World War II) and Green World (a gardening book). These books are available from La Jolla Book Publishing. She lives in La Jolla, CA. She has three children. Besides her accomplishment as an authority on Greek cuisine, she has received an award from the Ceramic Tile Institute of America for her ceramic tile murals which are installed in hospitals, homes and restaurants and community recognition for her crusade to save the Palm trees.

I feel like I know the author personally after creating many of the delicious, delectable entrees. The extra attention to detail helped me create the most mouth watering salads, desserts and main courses. My fiance didn't even like greek food until I tried these recipes! Now SHE circles the items that she wants me to make and I happily oblige!! I guess the way to a girls heart is through the stomach as well!! Thanks Ms Yianilos for a wonderful addition to our recipe collection!!

I started using Theresa Yianilos' cookbook so many years ago that the book's spine is now split, the pages are stained and dog-eared, and the whole book has a resinous and spicy odor. She understands Greek food, and she can get those of us who are not Greek to cook it well enough to make our mouths water. It is, simply, one of my all-time favorites.

I found this book 25 years ago in a library. It was out of print then, so I photo-copied the entire book. I have been using it since, and every recipe is wonderful. I am glad the book is once again in print, so I can buy a copy. (Actually, I will buy several. This will make a great gift for someone.) Enjoy.

I have cooked from Ms. Yianilos' book for thirty years, and continue to use it as a trusted friend for cooking for buffets, and small dinner parties, as well as for family dinners. The recipes are inventive, complex, and tasty. They do make more than the author suggests: if she says something serves four, it probably serves eight. But I would never give up my copy for anything!
