About the Author

Tony Spawforth is Professor of Ancient History and Honorary Curator of the Shefton Museum of Greek Art and Archaeology at Newcastle University. He co-edited the third edition of The Oxford Classical Dictionary and is co-author of Greece: An Oxford Archaeological Guide. A former Assistant Director of the British School of Archaeology at Athens, he has been involved in fieldwork on a number of Greek archaeological sites.

Tony Spawforth (1950- ) was born to an English father and a Scottish mother in London, U.K., where he grew up and went to school. His first job was as assistant director of the British School of Archaeology at Athens, Greece. He went on to teach and research Greek and Roman history for about thirty years at a university in north-east England. His publications include the third and fourth editions of "The Oxford Classical Dictionary", "Greece: An Oxford Archaeological Guide," "The Complete Greek Temples," and his latest book (2018), "The Story of Greece and Rome". An enthusiasm for rulers' courts and the French ancien regime led to his book "Versailles: A Biography of a Palace". Among his media work he presented nine documentaries for the BBC2 "Ancient Voices" TV series. He lives mainly in Brighton, U.K.

Not only is this survey not "complete", as other reviewers have noted, but it is full of breezy statements concerning specific details without any footnotes or references. Each chapter simply has a Further Reading list which often contains nothing remotely related to the intriguing statements Spawforth tosses out. (I can certainly pull out the book and quote some if anyone feels this review is commiting the same sin.) I am sure that in his capacity as a professor, Spawforth would fail any paper submitted by a student that contained even a small fraction of the unsubstantiated statements made in this book. I was not looking for bones to pick while reading it, just became increasingly frustrated not finding any pertinent further source material.
