The Complete Guide to Pitching Paperback – Audiobook, January 2, 2013

Purchase options and add-ons

There is more to becoming a great pitcher than sound mechanics, a blazing fastball, and a live arm. A pitcher must know how to pitch—what to throw, when to throw it, and where to locate it. He must have a me-versus-you mind-set, that unique blend of confidence and determination that fuels a passion to set the tone of the game, own the mound, and shut down the opponent.

The Complete Guide to Pitching is the most comprehensive pitching resource available. Derek Johnson, one of the game’s premier pitching coaches, takes you inside the art and science of pitching. You’ll discover these strategies:

• Upper- and lower-body pitching mechanics

• Most effective arm and shoulder strengthening workouts

• Shutting down the opponent’s running game

• Developing a potent pitching arsenal, including the splitter, curve, and changeup

• Creating a pregame pitching plan

• Situational strategies and recognizing hitters’ weaknesses

• Fielding the position

• In- and off-season conditioning programs

• Windup, stretch, and follow-through

From pregame warm-ups to cultivating the pitcher–catcher relationship, it’s all here in this one-of-a-kind book and DVD package. Featuring skill instruction, development drills, exercises, personal insights, and instruction on every aspect of pitching, The Complete Guide to Pitching is a must-have for every pitching coach, pitcher, and baseball fan.

Figure 2.11 (a) Pitcher’s proper hip alignment in comparison to hips that are (b) closed or (c) open.

Along with misaligned knees, I have also seen pitchers use many odd setups for the starting position of the hips. Obviously, the starting position for the hips is directly related to the position of the feet, so if the pitcher maintains the back-foot toe to front-foot arch relationship mentioned earlier, the hips will align themselves properly. The pitcher’s hips should be completely perpendicular to the rubber and the plate (see figure 2.11a). An inward turned hip or one that is severely closed off because of the foot placement can create a disadvantage for the pitcher when he begins to load his hip during the leg lift (see figure 2.11b). The loading and unloading of the hips will be addressed in greater detail later in this book.

Figure 3.13 Symmetry between the front and back side with the arms creating mirror images.

Creating symmetry between front (glove) and back (throwing) side is a matter of the pitcher understanding where the arm goes after the hands break at the midline of the body. Wherever the throwing arm goes and whatever distance it travels, the glove side should create a mirror image and a counterbalance by going in the exact opposite direction (see figure 3.13). If the glove side mimics the throwing side in length and angle, the pitcher will have a very good chance to be on time at the moment of truth: the release point. Consistently being on time at the release point gives the pitcher the ability to throw the ball where he wants and also gives him the best opportunity for making consistent secondary pitches. House referred to this as “equal and opposite.” We refer to it as matching. Both mean the same thing, but the term matching creates a more visual image that the pitcher can perceive faster. We have been matching things our whole lives.

Derek Johnson, pitching, baseball, sports, Book and DVD, in-season cycle.

Figure 12.1 The in-season cycle.

Figure 12.1 shows the phases that a pitcher should pass through during the season. These phases are designed to help the pitcher develop a structured routine throughout the course of the season and build purpose into the various training regimens that he will cycle through. After competing, the pitcher will evaluate thoroughly what went well and what went wrong, coming up with a basic plan that identifies the things he must work on before his next start. After

evaluating, the pitcher then passes into the repair phase; in this phase, he focuses on readying his arm and body for his next outing. This phase is short but extremely important, and it deals primarily with the ability portion (athleticism) of pitcher training. The third phase is the preparation phase in which the pitcher works on the skill elements of his game. This includes bullpen sessions for command and feel as well as mechanical adjustments or pitch development if needed.

About the Author

Derek Johnson, named college baseball’s National Pitching Coach of the Year in 2004 and National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2010, is widely considered one of the top pitching coaches in the country. In October 2012, he accepted a position with the Chicago Cubs as their minor league pitching coordinator. Before his appointment with the Cubs, he spent 11 years as pitching coach at Vanderbilt, three as associate head coach. While at Vanderbilt, four of his last five staffs led the Southeastern Conference in earned-run average (ERA). His staffs were also ranked nationally at number 15 (2003), 7 (2004), 17 (2005), and 13 (2007). More than 25 of Johnson’s past pitchers have been drafted.

Under Johnson’s tutelage, Vanderbilt participated in the College World Series in 2011, led by eight players who would later be selected in the Major League Baseball draft, including first-round picks Sonny Gray and Grayson Gravin. The 2011 pitching team led the Southeastern Conference in ERAs and strikeouts. In 2010, the Commodores allowed the fewest home runs in the league, led by Sonny Gray, who was named Baseball America’s Summer League Player of the Year (the Commodores’ third win in five years). For his efforts with this team, Johnson was named the ABCA/Baseball America Assistant Coach of the Year.

Johnson's 2007 crew led the SEC in eight statistical categories, including ERA (3.55), strikeouts (632), opponents’ batting average (.238), complete games (7), and runs allowed (266). Vanderbilt hurlers also threw a school record 606.2 innings in 67 games with 13 saves. Six pitchers from that 2007 staff were drafted and signed into the professional ranks, led by number-one overall pick David Price (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) and the eighth overall pick, Casey Weathers (Colorado Rockies).

Johnson lives in Nashville, Tennessee.
