I am an elementary school guidance counselor who wanted to create a service learning program in my school, but wasn't sure how to get it off the ground. This book not only offers service learning project ideas, but also how to tie them to curriculum. It also suggests different fiction and non-fiction literature on the subject by grade level!!!

I have been reading your "The Complete Guide to Service Learning" the last few days. I am teaching teachers tomorrow about the 40 Developmental Assets and integrating Service Learning into their curriculum. Your book is great. It is thorough. It is user friendly and it has great information that is easy to digest. I especially like the "Across the Curriculum" sheets.

The Complete Guide To Service Learning has changed the way we do things at my elementary school. As an elementary school principal in my district, it is important that we implement the 40 Developmental Assets framework. I don't see a better way to implement the 40 Assets framework than to do it with service learning. Service learning is known as a gateway asset, and it seems much more efficient to focus on this instructional concept to build as many Assets as possible. The transformation of the "Canned Food Drive" discussed in this book is a terrific story to discuss with staff when implementing service learning for the first time. The story as well as the book is both inspiring and informational.

In recent years scholastic institutions across the country have taken the necessary steps to make service learning an integral component to a student's education. Whereas classroom work and homework strengthen a student's mastery of their chosen field of study, civic engagement prepares them for the real world, post-graduation. By instilling in a student the need to serve the community at large, modern institutions are successfully creating "agents" of change rather than "subjects" of change.

"The Complete Guide to Service Learning: Proven, Practical Ways to Engage Students in Civic Responsibility, Academic Curriculum, & Social Action," by Cathryn Berger Kaye, not only details the importance of this shift to a service-learning-based education, but also contains numerous hands-on ways to incorporate service learning activities into the curriculum.

This isn't merely a book, it's a resource - a practical guide for teachers and parents looking to enthuse and encourage today's youth about the importance of giving back to their community. In addition to a welcome abundance of activity ideas, the text is filled with further-reading recommendations based on grade level. It also contains motivating quotes, essays written by experts in the field, and interviews. What's more - the book is user friendly, providing a format that makes reading those sections that are most important to the teacher at any given time simple and effortless.

What's best about this book is that it inspires; it inspires teachers to make a difference in the lives of their students, and in turn the life of the community. Civic responsibility and accountability are important at all grade levels, and in this text their benefits shine.

This is a good foundational resource. It is a bit limited in theoretical context and depth, however has some great ideas for getting started. There are also some very nice templates for facilitating planning, thoughtful writing/processing, and reflecting for students which is an essential component of service learning.

When I bought this book I had hoped for more insight into the impact of service learning. Although there is some rationale for service learning in this book, it is mostly a guide book to help one develop the service learning experience. The greatest part of this book is the suggested literature to combine with the service learning project. Great for all ages!
