This 36-Track 2CD set allocates Disc 1 to BACON FAT and Disc 2 to GEORGE SMITH. Disc 1 is loosely based around Bacon Fat's 1st LP for the Blue Horizon label "Grease One For Me" from 1970 and Disc 2 around George Smith's sole LP for the label "No Time For Jive" from 1971. In between these two albums are a rare 7" single and a wad of previously unreleased live material.

Here's the layout:

Disc 1 (79:10 minutes): BACON FAT
Tracks 1 to 10 are the "Grease One For Me" Blue Horizon album from 1970 (7-63858)
Tracks 11 and 12 are the A&B sides of a 1970 7" single on Blue Horizon (57-3181, "Evil" and "Blues Feeling", both tracks are non-album)
Tracks 13 to 20 are previously unreleased live tracks (see 9 to 16 on Disc 2)

Disc 2 (74:38 minutes): GEORGE SMITH
Tracks 1 to 8 are the "No Time For Jive" Blue Horizon album from 1971 (7-63856)
Tracks 9 to 16 (as well as 13 to 20 on Disc 1) are previously unreleased live tracks by BACON FAT and GEORGE SMITH recorded at Hull, Bexley, Leicester, Plymouth and other UK locations during their November 1970 tour

The band BACON FAT was essentially a vehicle for ROD PIAZZA and his superb `chromatic' harmonica playing - loud, live and gutsy! The band line-up on Disc 1 includes BUDDY REED and GREGG SCHAEFER on Guitars, J.D. NICHOLSON on Piano with JERRY SMITH on Bass and DICK INNES on Drums. Track 5 only, "I Need Your Love", features J.D. NICHOLSON on Leads Vocals and Piano, while Track 8 only, "Telephone Blues", features GEORGE SMITH on Lead Vocals and Harmonica.

The album "Grease One For Me" has Little Milton and Smiley Lewis covers, 2 Rod Piazza originals ("Small's On 53rd" and "She's A Wrong Woman") and a lone contribution from J.D. Nicholson on "I Need Your Love".

If so, you need to pick up this fabulous reissue ASAP. Two disks, two fabulous harp players, music that is timeless in its power and soul. I am a harmonica player, and have listened to the recordings and live performances of practically every other prominent harmonica player out there, for the past forty years. Not that I'm into ratings, but I have long held the opinion that Rod Piazza is the greatest blues harmonica player alive. His playing on this set is of course, heavily influenced by the immortal Little Walter Jacobs, but as far back as 1970, Rod already showed the flash, fire and ferocity that he and his band still exhibit today. Rod has taken the harp, particularly the chromatic harp, to a completely new level. If you live in SoCal, and you haven't seen the Mighty Flyers tear it up live, you should be ashamed of yourself.
George Smith was Rod's mentor. Simply amazing player and singer. You should get every George Smith recording you can find; there are precious few of them.
No library of electric blues harp would be complete without this one.

From the days of his early recordings with Bacon Fat, featuring blues harp legend and mentor George "Harmonica" Smith, Piazza shows he was great from the gate and this recording features the great Smith, who may be somewhat overlooked in the pantheon of classic old school blues hapists.

I bought this because I remembered and obviously liked, one song from the Grease Me album from way back when. I didn't know how that song, or the others, would hold up. There are some first rate songs here and done well. The musicianship ranks with the finest blues bands. The vocals, mostly by Rod Piazza, could be stronger as his voice lacks the depth and authority of say Muddy Waters or Howling Wolf but that's really a quibble. It's instrumentally that they shine.

I have been following the music of George Harmonica Smith for years. Great singing voice and harmonica. He is joined by his Bacon Fat band one 1/2 of the cd which featured a young protege by the name of Rod Piazza. Excellent chromatic harmonica. Well worth the price.

top-notch. I expected Rod Piazza to be amateurish and low-key, given the nascent stage of his storied career. But no, he is exceptional at harmonica. And of course, George Harmonica Smith is the real standout here. Mind-blowing chops, both on harmonica and singing.

Harmonica blues with Rod Piazza and BACON FAT on disc 1 and George Smith on disc 2. This really is a great addition to any blues collection. The remastering and subsequent sound makes this an easy decision to buy, but it's not so easy to purchase as there are usually only used copies available and it could be expensive.
