American Democracy would be strengthened if every American were encourage to read this book. Its contents and layout would greatly enhance the teaching of US history and government and make Americans remember not only what American democracy is but some idea (over time) how and why it developed as it did. This balanced book in semi-textbook style systematically lays out the foundations and development of the American nation's political structures and standards. This is the kind of book that might allow people to become more patriotic or at least more understanding about the merits and weaknesses of American government.

Each chapter provides not only insight but also paths to deeper understanding of our American laws but clues on where to look in order to gain further understanding.

I am no expert, but I have always had a deep appreciation for government, politics, law and history. This book amply provides a great starting point in all of these areas when it comes to understanding the government of the United States of America.

I purchased this book for several different reasons; first of all I have recently become enpassioned about politics but felt that I have been missing some of the fundementals. Secondly, I am recently changed my major to Political Science-I am taking my first PoliSci class in the fall. I felt it was important to master some of the basics before attending class.
This book has been perfect. It is easy to follow and a fairly simple read. Yet it is quite informative. The content has really helped to clarify some basic concepts. I like the fact that it is in a summary format.
I would recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a straight forward approach to government history and structure.

This book provides a comprehensive but accessible description of the complicated political system in the U.S. It is written primarily for Americans but as a European (Swede) interested in international politics I find it equally valuable. I finally understand not only the difference between the senate and the house of representatives, the importance of the American constitution, the election process and so on but also the historical background and rationale behind. Read this book if you have any interest in the oldest and best implementation of democracy in the world! As a European you can only wish our democratic systems were as wisely constructed and balanced.

I wanted my son to know more about government because he kept asking questions and....welll...dont think less of me but I really did not want to answer so many questions. So I bought the book and gave it to him. Of course the questions only increased but this time he knew enough to ask questions that provoked my interest so we had a good discussion over several days. If it gives him an interest in what is going on in the government then it was well worth the price.

This book is a wonderful introduction to the very unique system of U.S. Government. The concepts behind the way the government is organized, how it evolved and how it works are all presented in unbiased, straight foward prose. In addition, other important concepts are presented such as the Media, Special Intrest Groups. Political Parties and much more. The effect of these outside influences not only shape the government's public policy but illustrates the way in which the government responds to outside pressure. I feel that this book is an indespensible volume for concerned American Citizens. In contrast to the sometimes shrill, biased, loud, diatribes that pose as news, this book is informative, reasoned, thoughtful, balanced, and a clear look at how and why the government works.
I just wish they would lose the "Idiot" in the title. I know this is meant to be lighthearted and to distinguish this series from the other well know competitor, but I can't help be feel a tiny bit insulted. It's probably just me.

I liked the fact that this book was written in summary format. It is easy to read and informative. I also felt that the book was not biased the way a lot of political books are. Interesting to read. I would recommend it.
