I have been reading "Low-Cost Startups" for the past couple of days and it's really putting all the details into perspective for me. It has also given me an understanding of what I should be accomplishing first.

The book has really motivated me and my roommate (she went out and picked up her own copy. She found it insightful as well!)

Thanks Gail for creating this 'guide'!

-Jenn

I loved this book from start to finish. After having a baby I did not want to go back to teaching. Mrs. Reid's chapter on tutoring was extremely helpful and I am on my way to do what I love independently, without politics, paperwork, No Child Left Behind, and behaviors we teachers have to deal with daily while teaching in a public school.

THANKS Mrs. Reid

I found this book very informative without being too technical. As a matter of fact, I found it to be a quick and easy read. It made me "hopeful" that I could successfully start and run a small business with little to no capital - and that that business would lead to my bringing in a little extra money.

One thing the book has impressed upon me is that the one necessity for any business, low-cost startup or otherwise, is the ability to get the word out about your business. Hence, no matter what you plan to sell (product or service), how you plan to sell it (home-based or outside of your home), or how much you plan to sell it for, Marketing/Advertising IS A MUST - and that, in itself, takes effort and $$$.

I gave the book 4 stars because although it gave specific TYPES (only 2-3 applied to me) of businesses one could start, I would have enjoyed detailed, business-oriented information such as taxes, insurance, etc., especially since the author is an accountant.

I have owned my PR business for three years yet I still found this book The Complete Idiot's Guide to Low-Cost Startups to be extremely helpful. It's easy to to be passionate about your subject in the beginning but after years of sitting at a computer, enthusiasm starts to pale. This book got me fired up again and reminded me not to ignore the business side of running a small business. Five years is an important benchmark for start-ups and I feel this book will help me get there.

This book will be valuable for any new individual entrepreneur, at the startup stage and also after a few years of professional work !
I do think the message: keep your costs low and profits high, which is sometimes forgotten by larger startups, should be remembered and this book will give you a lot of tips on how to do this the right way.
It is also a great source for specific business opportunities.

Keep up the good work, Gail and keep in touch,
Kind regards, Christian Cochard, Paris
