Despite being one of the greatest achievements in the history of Western Music, Bach's organ works remain a niche product for a niche market. Part of this, in my opinion, is due to the fact that organ music is probably the musical genre hurt most greatly in the transfer from its origins (cathedrals and churches usually) to a home theater. Most stereo home theaters simply don't have good enough speakers or amps to replicate the full range and power of the organ, nor do most rooms have the space to replicate its grandeur. Much has changed, though, with the advent of multi-channel systems, where subwoofers and center channels take the strain off of the front speakers and amps. Today, even modest home theaters are capable of reproducing organs much more faithfully than has ever been possible.

Despite that fact, there are very few organ recordings of Bach that take advantage of these new technological possibilities. When it comes to his complete works there are only two options: Knud Vad's Set on Membram, and Aeolus's set played on Silbermann organs by four organists As an audiophile (my system: Modwright Oppo 105D -> Marantz AV8801 pre/pro -> ATI AT1807 -> Legacy Whisper XDS fronts, Marquis HD Center, Expression surrounds) and a huge fan of Bach's organ music--I actually consider them the pinnacle of his output, and I'm NOT an organist or organphile, in general!--I was very excited to hear both sets, but because of their steep price I can understand the preference of most would be to choose one or the other. So the purpose of this review is to give my impressions of both.

Verified Purchase
I bought this as a gift, specifically requested by the recipient. Insofar as the product is concerned, I believe the recipient was pleased. As the purchaser, I was extremely displeased, when I found out that it was available MUCH cheaper from other sources. I had purchased via Amazon in the mistaken belief that Amazon would always be priced lower, and also believing incorrectly that it was not available from the original seller. I wasted a lot of money via Amazon's source.
