I'd been hoping for years that someone would eventually publish the complete works of Charles Schulz, so I was really glad to see this first volume, covering the first strips of 1950-52. This book is of high quality, and it's a lot of fun to read these early strips where the characters were first developing. One especially nice feature of the book is an index -- you can look up the first use of "good grief", the first appearance of Linus, the first time Lucy pulls a football away from Charlie brown, etc. I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of volumes 2-25 (to be published during 2004-2015).

I read and re-read the Peanuts comics as a child for years. I'm so glad that finally there's a complete anthology of all the strips, in order. It may take me years, but I will eventually buy all the volumes.

I've been meaning to start my Peanuts collection ever since these started coming out and I am so happy to finally have. Such a great experience going through the classic beginnings of what would become one of the most treasured pieces of art in the world. A great look at how far the series has come and even a great look at America in the 1950s. A beautifully bound book, crisp pictures. Just a joy to have.

I love early Peanuts. The style is so simple and cute. In my opinion this is the best volume of this series. The book is really sturdy and it looks great!

Let me say this from the start I do not like any Peanuts stips drawn in the 1970's and onward, but the 1950's and 1960's stuff is pure gold. There is a primal energy to this stuff that is rarely matched.

The format (to me at least) is just perfect when you want to sit back in your favorite chair and revisit old friends. So if your really old paperbacks are falling apart give them some rest and buy this excellent edition without a moment's hesitation.

Bought this volume because: 1) Peanuts was my favorite comic strip growing up in the 60s/70s, and 2) I have a paperback from the early 50s that included many of the strips in Vol. 1, and I wanted to see the early development of characters contained in the first volume.

A plus is that this book includes every strip in the time period, but a minus is that the Sunday strips are not in color. I was surprised at the book's rather small dimensions, but the paper stock is top quality and the daily strips are printed at least as large as they were published in newspapers. Another surprise is that even in the earliest 1950s Sunday strips, the top one-third of the strip could be removed by a publisher without any loss of continuity contained in the lower two-thirds of the strip - I thought this was a much later creation that allowed newspapers to jam their Sunday strips into fewer pages.

I never intended to purchase the entire series, just the first volume. And while later volumes may contain higher quality strips that I would probably enjoy more, I'm satisfied with volume one. Schulz's work diminished considerably in his later years, so I would never consider purchasing the entire series. However, I do recommend The Complete Calvin and Hobbes volumes - Bill Watterson was smart to quit while he was still at the top of his creative game.

This book features the first two years and three months of the Peanuts comic strip. It's fascinating to see the evolution of characters like Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Schroeder, Lucy, Linus, Violet, Shermy and Patty. Other than the historical significance, the comics are quite funny. Charles Schulz had it from the beginning, even if the characters weren't fully formed at the time. Highly recommended.
