The Earl of Rochester was the favorite courtier of Charles II of England during a time called the Restoration. The English civil war was over, the puritanical visions of Oliver Cromwell were rejected, and the fun began again. Rochester loved women, he loved making love, he was a skirt chaser, a sexual addict, and he wrote about his addiction with force, fun, and fame. Every dirty word you can think of is here, sometimes elegantly, sometimes not. He's rarely taught in courses of English literature because of his utter frankness in describing the love act, in describing women's bodies and scents and flesh. My goodness, what a guy!!!

The 2nd Earl of Rochester (John Wilmot) is one of our greatest love poets in the English language. He and his work have been neglected in previous times because of the debauched lifestyle he had led and what was once perceived as the obscene nature of some of his poetry. Today, these poems are recognized as some of the most beautiful erotic verse ever written. They speak of every kind of sexual love, from unrequited love to fulfilled love, from young love to the nastalgia of remembering long-ago love, from ethereal love to barnyard lust--it's all there. Many of his more racy poems have been lost down the centuries through lack of publication, censorship and other similar factors, but much of his best work survives.
I like Rochester's poems for the colorful use of language they possess, the depths of passionate sentiment they convey, and the understanding of eroticism that is so characteristic of this great poet's work[...]

Thoes old fellas sure new how to swear

It's only in the past deacade that we have re-discovered the fine English art of swearing, and here we have a classic wrighter to remind us how its done. Rochester's poetry is both funny and irrevirent, and his genuine hatred of mankind is tangible and heart warming. And he's not afrade of calling someone a c##t either! The perfect antidote to all that crap about love they made you read in school

One of the Great Neglected Ones

The Earl of Rochester lived a life worthy of Tom Jones. He was indeed a deabauched libertine, slightly less worthy of censure than the Marquis de Sade. Yet he was something that De Sade was not, a great wit. Though nowhere near the range or genius of Pope or Swift, he nevertheless compiled a great body of satirical poetry in the Juvenalian tradition. His "Satyre Against Mankind," Like Swift's Houyhnhnms chapters, present human beings in their true place in nature, despite all the panegyrics and biblical references placing us at the top of the chain. If you are lover of satire, as I am, and don't mind observations that place us amongst the lower orders rather than atop some Parnassian peak, give this volume a try.

This collection of poetry is exactly the starting block I was looking for to begin my dissertation on the work of Rochester. Unfortunely I was sent another book to begin with but the company replaced it quickly and allowed me to keep "Saints and Sinners" by Eamon Duffy for free. Not perfect but I realise that mistakes are made and this was corrected to my satisfaction

BookReview The complete poems of #JohnWilmot, Earl of Rochester. Every age has its hedonists, its voluptuaries and its debauchees. During the English restoration period in the 17th century few fit these labels as well as John Wilmot, the second Earl of Rochester. A libertine to his very core, Wilmot lived a life of drunken excess, filled with turmoil and feuds that eventually lead to his tragic death at the age of 33 (most likely of syphilis). His autobiography alone is an impressive an interesting read, but like many other hedonists his extremity also permeated into his thought. This allowed him to produce some wonderfully insightful, witty, and politically charged poetry. Although the first part of his career is marred by a personal immaturity, as he seemed to be fixated on referring to any women who would not go to bed with him as tyrants, his middle to late period work is fantastic. His move to include cultural and philosophical satire resulted in his best work. I personally recommend the poems “A Saytr against reason and mankind”, “Signoir dildo”, and “A Ramble in St. James Park”. This particular edition which is edited and with an introduction by David Vieth, is a fairly academic text with a large focus on attempting to establish a Rochester canon. This resulted in the book having extensive foot notes, bibliographies, and sourcing, which means that the actual non academic portion of the book, and the actual poetry sections, are a much smaller portion. The extensive footnotes do come in hand however, as his middle to late period poetry deals at great lengths with either current political figures or allusions that he believed his audience would have culturally understood.Rochester like many of his fellow libertines, at least those who came from the aristocratic class, was well tutored; alluding to #roman and #Greek texts and figures, far away lands and even the more contemporaneous figures such as Descartes and Hobbes, the latter of whom Rochester only outlived by around 8 months. Rochester demonstrates how the #hedonistic movements, the idea that we must maximize pleasure and minimize pain, has produced such profound thought in the western world. It has produced schools from the Cyrenaics, to the libertines and the utilitarians. It has brought us philosophers, poets and rock stars. However, it’s emphasis on the sense experience not only leads you to a better understanding of the world, but it can also lead you to be consumed by it. I think it is far from false equivocation to call Wilmot not only a poet, but a philosopher, a freethinker and a “rockstar” of 17th century English Restoration poetry
