An incredible, comprehensive collection of poetry on a variety of subjects, including tall ships, World War I experiences, and turn-of-the-century rural life. Many of Cicely Fox Smith's poems are being set to music in recent years by folk singers, and one look at her poetry will tell you why. Smith had a brilliant, authentic voice and a gift for spinning a yarn. Highly recommended. The copy I keep in my seachest is dog-eared and full of bookmarks.
This complete collection, inspired by contemporary folk-singers who couldn't resist the lure of traditional sounding verses, was captivating. The authenticity of detail led some of the poet's contemporaries to address the woman who wrote the verses as "Captain," though women almost never had any connection with the tough life of sailors. Even the non-maritime verses are captivating, especially the poems aimed at children.
A truly beautiful 760 pages , 1.371 kg of a book. it is evident that this is a labour of love from the authors : the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The book would grace the shelves of many a yachting club. For those who have the slightest dose of sea-fever , i prescribe this book. For those unfamiliar with C. Fox Smith , there's a treat in store.
