From the Author
Puppy-hood only lasts a few short month, and can be the most delightful and the greatest challenge for you. I'm sure that puppies were designed to be full of cute-icity, so we'd be tolerant of their hijinks. Yikes! My house still has chew-marks from when my dogs were babies.
Your new puppy is a sponge eager to soak up all the lessons you can teach. That's why I wrote COMPLETE PUPPY CARE (as a companion to the COMPLETE KITTEN CARE book), to help you get off on the right 'paw' and build a relationship that grows stronger as the years go on. Let's face it--the CUTE FACTOR only goes so far, so I've included training tips, behavior advice, care information and even first aid help to keep your bumbling baby safe.
I currently live with a 10-year-old GermanShepherd comedian dog, a 4-year-old silver shaded tabby delinquent, anda 21-years-youngSiamese wannabe. The pet intro how-to in the book worked great when I brought Magical-Dawg home (he was 8 weeks, and Seren-kitty was 9 years old!). If you have a multi-dog household the tips in ComPETability: Solving Behavior Problems in Your Multi-Dog Household may be helpful, too. And I hope your new pup lives to a ripe old age in which case my book Complete Care for Your Aging Dog will keep him happy during his golden years.

Cons: This book is essentially a bunch of internet articles slapped together in a book format. As such, it's very repetitive, not at all streamlined, and in places even seems to contradict itself. It has many typos, especially towards the end. It comes across as quite unprofessional, and I was frequently embarrassed for the author and the editor as I went through it.
Obviously, I think this is a very good book, in fact, probably one of the very best I have read, and I have read a LOT of them. As the one time head of the Pacific Northwest Jack Russell Terrier Network Rescue, we had a lot of problem Terriers and several of us often went to dog seminars by experts to find help figuring out how to fix the problems we were seeing in many of our rescued Jack Russells. I think we would not have had to do this is the old owners had this book to read in depth. BUT you would have to put in a lot of time to make a good puppy companion. As the saying goes, “You get out, what you put in”. Following and learning what is described in the book will certainly put you not only on the right path, it should help you create a great forever friend.
But, let me assure you, it’s not easy. It is time consuming and hard work. Trying to get a whole family following the advice written here will be tricky but if done according to Amy Shojai’s line of reasoning, all will benefit. I have only one thing to add, she explains words to use along with hand signals while teaching. I found that I had to make sure I wrote myself a doggie handbook of exactly what I was using because there is a lot of information to remember.
Again, an extremely good book full of information. If used and studied properly , all your creatures will benefit. Just make sure to give it the time and attention it and your animals deserve. Thanks Amy for a great teaching tool!
Complete Puppy Care by Amy Shojai
Amy is a well known animal behaviorist, and expert on pets. As my roommate has become the proud mom to a now 7 month old GSD puppy, I jumped at the chance to read this book. When Baron's mommy has the chance , I will have her read the book as well. (Did I mention she is dealing with a 7 month old puppy?)
I have read some of Amy's other books on pets, as well as her Thrillers with Bite series.
Her pet books are written in a folksy style. She doesn't talk down to the reader, as you read you can imagine her sitting at your kitchen table, giving you some darn good advice on dealing with your pet. In this case, your puppy.
She gives you a lot of great information on selecting a puppy, and taking care of the puppy once you have your new fur kid. '
I could go into a lot of detail about what is in this book, but frankly, it boils down to this: If you have a puppy, or are considering getting a puppy, you need to read this book.
She covers everything from common puppy ailments, to how to prepare your home for the new arrival, and what to do after your fur baby comes to his or her new forever home. She also discusses how to introduce the newcomer to a household that already has other pets. That can be a traumatic experience for everyone involved. Amy gives you suggestions on how to make it a more peaceful transition.
Amy Shojai is the go to person on pet care, She has quite a few books on the subject.
All in all, this is an excellent book, from an author who knows her stuff.
