Product Description
Very possibly the most tragic waste of Oxbridge educations ever broadcast. The programme that made all of America sit up and say: what? That put Spam back in the national pantry, launched crossdressing as a national craze, and made Rene Descartes a household name. That dramatically streamlined the high-school geek identification process.

Society, shot it up,turned it upside down, flattened it and called it Mr.Gumby!!
What on the surface seems a simple enough point about the troupe but usually goes unnoticed today is their original appeal and impact.Python came out of the 60s rebellious era and while that trait alone wasn't surprising what was was their own nationality(British),their feigned attempts at portraying themselves as part of that staid and stuffy society all the while taking stabs at every English sacred cow and then some such as the police, the armed forces, the BBC,war vets, etc. which made it definitely "something completely different"! There has never been a program like it before or since.
Each program was filled with several sketches tied together more or less with animated segments by Terry Gilliam, the only Yank in the group.
Having watched the entire set with it's 16 DVDs I was favourably impressed by the quality of the transfers. They are pretty sharp and crisp. The only disappointment is the "Live at the Hollywood Bowl" film. The film is not in good condition and the colour is quite washed out.It is a full screen version and I wonder since some of the credits disappear off the screen that there isn't a widescreen version out there, hopefully in better condition than this.Time will tell.
I also noted that the sketches "Proust","Bruce" and "Biggles" have some quick moments that have slight cuts/jumps in them.I know the BBC is responsible for the first one but the other two I'm not sure of the who or why. There may be others but those are the three I noticed off hand. One will also notice that there are some film glitches and other various defects. From what I can determine these are things that are inherent in the original film and there's nothing that really can be done to excise them.
All 16 discs come in their own thin slip cases and are one sided(less chance of scratching!).Each DVD interactive menu if quite neat and each has its' own trivia spot about the particular ep you're watching and some neat special features including trivia question contests and more. There are alas no interviews with the cast mano a'mano but the 'Live at Aspen' DVD makes up a little for this.
Overall this is a set every Monty Python fan should own or a lover of good comedy. If you're one of the politically correct crowd I wouldn't advise you to buy this set as the guys leave NO stones unturned in their comedic efforts to offend and delight us all at the same time. It's a set I will certainly be watching again and again and you will too.
BUT---this is not the "complete" Python show, as they would have you believe on the outside of the box. For some unexplained reason, four episodes have a few bits missing or censored:
"It's The Arts"---the sketch about the composer with the frighteningly long name, "Johann Gamboleputty....". Eric Idle had a brief bit as an old man who dies halfway through saying Gamboleputty's full name. It's no longer there.
"Blood, Devastation, Death, War & Horror"---in the "Bus Conductor" sketch, Graham Chapman briefly sang a spoof version of "Tonight" from "West Side Story" ("Tonight, tonight, I'm getting p----d tonight!"). It's been cut. Maybe for legal reasons? Who knows.
"A Book At Bedtime"---there were opening captions prior to Terry Gilliam's opening title animation in this episode ("Tonight we start the show straight away with the opening titles.....No you didn't, you started with that caption....Oh yes."), as well as a concluding sketch about upcoming British comedy TV shows (including "Dad's Pooves" and "Up The Palace"). Both have been cut. Why?
"The All-England Summarize Proust Competition"---in the title sketch, Graham Chapman is censored from saying the word, "masturbating". Very silly.
So, this box set is the *Not Quite* Complete Monty Python's Flying Circus, which is disappointing, but I'll still take it. It's a comedy classic by a classic comedy troupe, easily the groundbreaking comedy equivalent of The Beatles. Thank you so much, Monty Python, for all of the great laughs. Albatross!!!

Actually only the packaging has been slightly modified. While on the Amazon-page only the DVD-case is shown, the DVD actually comes in a slip-case which is similar to the original release. The difference is, that this is no more a die-cut sleeve and instead of having a multi-fold dvd-tray this is simply a (big) armary case.
The discs themselves are identical to the 2008-version (they even have the same number and year on the label). This means it has Arabic, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Greek, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovene, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish subtitles and the first season is also dubbed in Polish and Hungarian (which still leaves me wondering if this is part of the joke or of its a true hungarian translation) and also all extra features are left intact: "Before the Flying Circus", "Conquer America", "Animated Gilliam" and "Politically Incorrect", so it has an overall running time of 1327 minutes (like the original release).
So, get it if you don't have it - this is the real deal!

Update 2020:
Coming back to this review after 6 years, I'll have to clarify a few points, which may be confusing to a today's reader:
- when doing this review in 2014 there were two different versions available (the 2008 release and the 2012 re-release).
- the 2008-version (costing roughly #80) had the full and correct amazon-data, the 2012-version (costing roughly #15) had the incomplete / incorrect data
- the links above pointed to the respective versions
- as of 2020 amazon has removed the 2008-version and only kept the 2012-version, fixed the the info for the 2012-version and also merged the reviews of both versions - thus, the above links do now point at the same product now.
- also the price got "adapted" to the original version
- still, this is the essential Monty Python-collection you need!
Yours sincerely
Arthur Flange (Mrs.)
Inevitably some sketches will have you laughing out loud (and far more of them than just the famous ones) and others might leave you blank faced. In a similar way, some episodes are consitently brilliant and others are more patchy, with the odd episode falling flat. (This is still true for the short 6-episode series 4 sans John Cleese. Although painfully apparent at first, I hardly noticed his absence by episode 4 and there are some brilliant sketches.) Having said that, the only way to fully appreciate Monty Python's brand of humour is to watch this whole set. Otherwise you are never likely to see some of the great sketches and will miss the effect of the integrated episodes that have recurring themes or motifs. Personally, I love this set much more than the films and there are just so many episodes here for a very reasonable price.
The bonuses include one very good documentary about the pre-Python days and another documentary about the success of Monty Python in America. The best extra is the "politically incorrect" sketch, which was dropped after its first showing at the beginning of a series 3 episode and is only now available as a stand alone poor quality copy. It is still a brilliant sketch.
Excellent set, well done Sony!
As the series contained very little that was topical, even thought the first episode dates all the way back to 1969 it still stands up very well today. It still feels fresh and original, and above all, funny! The Pythons played around as much as possible with the sketch form, managing to elicit huge laughs with the most bizarre situations and in the face of all comedy convention.
If you are looking here you probably don't need to be told how funny the series is, so I shall review the release as a whole.
All 44 episodes are contained on 7 discs, with an eighth disc of extras. Menus are a little clunky, with no `play all' feature which I find a little irritating, but no matter. The picture is original 4.3 aspect with a mono sound. Both sound and picture have been nicely remastered and cleaned up, leaving the picture as sharp and clean as it can be. There are subtitles in a whole range of languages, as well as Polish or Hungarian dubbing for series 1 only. The discs are collected into a foldout card case collected into a thin card slip case. The whole thing is about the size of three standard DVD cases.
The extras are so-so - the usual `how it all started', a look at the way they took over America, an interesting film where Terry Gilliam discusses his animations. OK, but personally I usually just watch the episodes.
An excellent set, especially for the price being asked. Well worth getting.
The Box set of The Flying Circus, the clever, funny and downright bizarre show that all other clever, funny or downright bizarre shows aspire to be. To call this the best comedy show ever is an understatement. Without the Pythons, and the brave BBC commissioners who allowed it to air, comedy would not be where it is today.
There is still so much to laugh at in these shows, flowing from Terry Jones' brilliant drag act to Eric Idle's fabulously annoying cockney salesman, from Graham Chapman's often straight-faced-but-tongue-in-cheek hilarity to Michael Palin's sly winks and incredible character acting, from Terry Gilliam's one-of-a-kind animations to John Cleese's anarchic maniac with a knife routine. And although some of their humour was topical, much of it was sheerly based on humanity, and will be relevant for eternity.
This box set will take some time to watch, and at the price, it has a fabulous laugh:pound ratio. Get this if you've got a sense of humour.
And now for something completely different...
