By G.D. VINE VOICE on March 25, 2009
This disc gives us an auspicious start to a very valuable series with fine accounts of some remarkable music. The six sonatinas are enormously inventive and variegated masterpieces - or at least near-masterpieces - with an almost unique sound-world and harmonic vocabulary. Pöntinen offers lyrical interpretations that pay real heed to the subtleties of the harmonic and rhythmic palette and is thus able to draw out the depths of reflection contained in the music. On the other hand, there is perhaps a certain lack of fire, muscularity and drama - the performances might be a little to soft and rounded for everyone's comfort; in some of the sonatinas, the second and fourth, for example, the effect is magical, but others - notably the most famous of them, the sixth (Carmen Fantasy) - sounds a little too cautious and lacking in drama and sweep.

The Indian Diary is uniformly excellent, full of sparkling wit and subtleties. The Toccata is also beautiful, but here as in the sonatinas, one might wish for just a tad more power and sweep. The recorded sound is fabulous, capturing the piano in warm detail. Overall, then, this disc is a must-hear for those who already know the works, and recommended to those who don't (who might, as a first encounter, get more out of more powerful alternative recordings).
