Ciurlionis is a new discovery for me. I am floored. There are few composers who can create visual pictures via an audio medium. Perhaps it is the fact this composer was about as prolific musically as he was at painting. The compositions range from tranquil to bold but in a way that is natural and progressive while remaining melodic and never harsh.

I prefer In The Forest with its pastoral feel, followed by The Sea which sways from a trickle to a big wave rolling in that is as natural as the sea itself. Last on this disc is De Profundis, a more solemn work deftly blended with the Kaunas State Choir.

This recording seems to be among the best, if the word of many is to be trusted. I would presumed the most authentic arrangement would be birthed from Ciurlionis' homeland of Lithuania where he is highly regarded.

The CD insert hints at Ciurlionis suffering from mental illness and finally deciding to walk in to the woods on a cold night only to be found and die from pneumonia at age 36. Too bad. His talent, in my book, is enormous and would have loved hearing how his talent would grow through a long life. Many who are so talented are sometimes troubled. Their raw talent is sometimes ahead of the time and typically prolific and varied. And that talent requires them to move outside the usual circles of society. Many times it at great sacrifice such as the near homelessness of the composer is mentioned in the notes, sometimes starving and unable to but a new pair of pants.

You hear none of these trials and tribulations in his music, but rather a soul finding it's place of comfort in his music that is charmingly melodic and natural. Certainly one of the best buys I have made this year.
