About the Author

During her lifetime, Pat Parker was a renowned African–American, lesbian–feminist poet and performer. She was the author of Jonestown & Other Madness (1985), Movement in Black (1978, 1983, 1989, 1999), Womanslaughter (1978), Pit Stop (1974, 1975), and Child of Myself (1972, 1974). Her poems appeared in numerous journals, newspapers, and anthologies. With Judy Grahn, she recorded the album Where Would I Be Without You (Olivia Records, 1976), and one of her spoken poems appeared on the album Lesbian Concentrate.

Julie R. Enszer, PhD, is a scholar and a poet. Her book manuscript, A Fine Bind, is a history of lesbian-feminist presses from 1969 until 2009. Her scholarly work has appeared or is forthcoming in Southern Cultures, Journal of Lesbian Studies, American Periodicals, WSQ, and Frontiers. She is the author of four poetry collections, Avowed (Sibling Rivalry Press, 2016), Lilith’s Demons (A Midsummer Night’s Press, 2015), Sisterhood (Sibling Rivalry Press, 2013) and Handmade Love (A Midsummer Night’s Press, 2010). She is editor of Milk & Honey: A Celebration of Jewish Lesbian Poetry (A Midsummer Night’s Press, 2011). Milk & Honey was a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award in Lesbian Poetry. She has her MFA and PhD from the University of Maryland. Enszer edits and publishes Sinister Wisdom, a multicultural lesbian literary and art journal, and a regular book reviewer for the The Rumpus and Calyx. These poems hit you with the truth bat. I'm reading this and thinking "this woman absolutely GETS it." What IT is, I can't put into words. Read this book to find out. She speaks for all women and her work is valuable because it is so unique and without all of the flim flam of pretentiousness.

Never has a work been more timely! Pat's incredible voice needs to be heard today more than ever and through this book, it will be heard once again, loud and clear! Many new and previously unpublished poems, essays, and stories are included. The fact that her work is finally getting the recognition it so richly deserves is further supported by the fact that her archives, including correspondence with Audre Lorde, Adrienne Rich, and others (which is NOT included in the "complete works"), is now housed at Harvard University's Schlessinger Library where it may be forever preserved and accessible for research. If you have not read Pat's work before, you are in for a powerful surprise. If you have been a fan for years, you will remember her strength, draw from it, and mourn her passing anew.
