In my search for converters, I wanted something that didn't break the bank otherwise I may as well just get a new tv. I found this item and thought I would take the risk of not working based on the reviews because of cost. I'm glad I did because it works great.
It didn't always work great and took a bit of tinkering to get there but it's been working solid since.
I tried it on my old tv first. Didn't get a signal at first. Then I plugged in the power, still nothing. Then I pulled the HDMI out and pushed it in harder. Got a reaction from that but still no picture.
Then I tried it on a newer tv with the same process. It worked and got a picture.
So now that I knew it works, I went back to the old tv. Did a few things and ended up with a constantly scrolling picture. Then I decided to switch to PAL from NTSC and that fixed it even though the tv is not PAL. Maybe it wasn't labeled properly? But it worked fine on NTSC on the newer tv, so I don't know.
I'm not even sure that it needs the USB power because if I unplug it, it still works. But I keep it plugged in just in case.
So in short, works great, just be sure to check your HDMI connection, power connection, and check the NTSC/PAL switch.
The converter I purchased was for HDMI to AV/RCA, so I could plug in my Apple TV generation 2 into an old CRT TV (tubed TV). Easy enough to plug the cords in: HDMI from the Apple TV into the HDMI input and the AV cable into the output and into my TV, which only utilizes the yellow (video) and white (audio) parts of the cord. If you are in the US, you need to make sure that the converter is set to NTSC, not PAL, or it will show in black and white. Once I switched, I now have color. :)
Oh! And you'll need to find an adapter to plug the cord into the wall (unless you have one of those super-spiffy USB wall outlets). Any USB to ground plug will do. I used an old iPhone 5 adapter to plug the cord into an outlet.
