I knew both authors from their previous works, so I was confident I would like the book. The book is written in a conversational manner, but includes research to back up the information they present. Having taught using the Primary Years Programme, which emphasizes the inquiry approach they advocate I was a bit surprised that they did not reference this framework, but maybe they are not aware of the similarity. I would recommend this book for any teacher of students from K-12, the age or subject area is not important. It is important that teachers get a look inside classrooms where this kind of learning is going on and the scenarios presented in the book are this glimpse into real classrooms. I will recommend this book to the professional book club at my school, as it is the rare book that all teachers can appreciate.

This is a fantastic book that shows readers the process of inquiry-based teaching by showcasing various units that teachers have done with their students. The case studies are accessible for people new to inquiry-based teaching and idea-generating for experienced inquiry teachers. The ideas in this book are immediately applicable to state curriculum and tomorrow's lesson plan. The foundation of this book rests on:

- literacy
- collaboration
- student inquiry

This is one teaching book I will NOT resell.

I've always enjoyed reading the educational products by Harvey Daniels, but sometimes his books get too bogged down in the folksy wisdom. I'm always a little skeptical when educational experts give me too many anecdotes and not enough hands-on practical lessons. Now, having said that, I'm glad I purchased the book. There are some valuable tips and ideas as well as practical lessons for the classroom. I would say that it is better suited for middle and younger students. It is a good size, so that makes the price worthwhile. I'm not sure that the usable ideas are worth the price, though.

There is no replacement for the DVD that is included with the printed book. Additionally, the authors put in "lesson links" that would give the page number of an example at the grade level you choose, but the kindle edition doesn't have real page numbers, so you can't find the lessons! It seems as if the book has some good ideas, but without being able to easily find the "meat" of the book, I don't have enough information to evaluate the content properly. DO NOT get the kindle version!

6/20/13 update:
The missing parts of the book have now been added to the Kindle edition! Naturally the DVD is still missing, but at least the book itself is complete. I can now give an unqualified positive review of the content. The authors not only have some excellent ideas on using inquiry and groups, but give copious examples in elementary, middle, and high school for each concept addressed. Excellent!

I used this book to guide me in implementing Inquiry Circles into my class last year. I found the sample lessons and ideas for implementation to be very useful. A bonus was that my students really enjoyed researching topics of interest to them and their engagement was high, making my need to monitor behavior less.

This is an excellent book. I love it for lessons on inquiry. They work great as mini lessons. Good ideas on how to teach students to collaborate in small groups.
