"This was a hard one to put down...While the sexual tension between the two is obvious, the best parts of this book are when we see Gray's interactions with those she cares about...Being inside Gray's head as she works through these issues is almost heartbreaking...There is just an honest beauty there..." Give Me Books

From the Author

Excerpt from Compulsive:
"You're still my patient, aren't you?"

I turned to face him, knowing my left cheek would be exposed. "If you'll have me," I said, holding back tears of shame.

"My God, Gray. What happened to you?"

A tentative reach of his hand toward my face made my breath catch. He stalled before touching two gentle fingers to my chin. "Are you all right? Is there more?"

I shook my head. "I'm fine. It looks worse than it is." My heart beat a little faster when I read the concern in his eyes.

"Our deal stands whether we're in my office or not." Daniel struggled to remain composed. "Who did this to you?" he commanded.

Our deal for honesty wouldn't be a problem tonight. "I did."

"Gray." He looked away as if he was planning his escape.

"That's the truth, Daniel. I'm responsible. I'm responsible for every bad thing that's ever happened to me."

His eyes returned to mine, determined. "No one has the right to lay a hand on you. Do you understand me?"

I nodded, wide-eyed like an obedient child.

"One're going to rise above your circumstances. You're going to be a survivor instead of a victim. Your strengths will become assets instead of your downfall. Are you hearing me, Gray?"

His words riveted me like a savior at a sermon. He knew everything about me, though he knew nothing at all. A strong hand engulfed my forearm as if I was sinking in quicksand, and he was my lifeline, a way to claw and climb my way out. "Every word," I whispered.

I cried more than once while reading this. I was fully absorbed in this story of a compulsive liar, who used lying to cope with so much sadness and grief.

Her name is Gray. She uses men, alcohol, and lies to cope with life. Nathan is her safety blanket, and she's not open with her shrink. But Alyssa, a neglected teen, allows her to bond. Then there is Dr. Harrison... Because of her trying to get him as her new shrink, there are unexpected developments. I cried, laughed, and enjoyed it all.

There are a couple of sex scenes, and there is much to do with death of loved ones. Just a heads up.

The story has many layers and storylines, all work well together. This is book 1 and ends in a bit of a cliffhanger. I'm ready for book 2!

My Rating: 4.5 Coffee Cups!!!

I was a little bit skeptical of this book at first. When a love story arises from a therapist-patient pairing it could easily go epically wrong. And for other books that have used this catalyst it has. It’s an intimate relationship and when the characters seem to have no issues about blurring the lines it makes it unrealistic, forced and makes me shake my head with an ugly faced grimace. But enough about what could go wrong, let’s focus on the fact that Lia Fairchild did ABSOLUTELY NONE of this. This was beautifully done. The story was in-depth, believable and heart-wrenching.

Gray Donovan is, simply put, a liar. She can’t seem to help herself. She has been this way for as long as she can remember. She uses lying, sex and alcohol to cope with her demons. In a seamless way Ms. Fairchild brings you back and forth from the present to the past. Her demons unfold right before you as you see exactly what causes her to become the flawed woman she is. She’s been to therapists before to try and help “fix” her, but she can never fully commit or connect. She may want to change, but she doesn't feel she needs to.

Enter Dr. Daniel Harrison. In a chance encounter Daniel sees the woman that Gray can be and wants to help her become that woman. He puts his immediate attraction for her aside and tries to become the person she can lean on. The person she can be honest with, even when she is not being honest to herself. He, simply put, tries to become her friend instead of just her doctor. He falls for Gray, but knows that she does not need him to be her boyfriend or her lover right now. She needs him for more than that.

The angst is definitely present in this story. Gray doesn't deny the feelings that grow for Daniel.

*I was given a copy in exchange for an honest review. Reviewed for Wicked Women Book Blog.*
I was sucked into Gray’s story in Compulsive in the beginning. The first 40% had me turning the pages. I have never read a story that was centered on a compulsive liar, so I was very intrigued. At that point the story slowed down a bit for me.
In Compulsive we meet Gray and find out that she has a very tragic background, which we assume triggered her compulsive lying. Her therapist has to suddenly move away and as a condition of being able to return to work, she has to find a new therapist to complete the required number of sessions. In walks Dr. Daniel Harrison. There is an instant attraction between the two. They both know that it would probably not be in her best interest if they started a doctor-patient relationship because of the attraction, but they do so anyway.
This story also has a lot of side situations going on as well. There are many other supporting characters in this story that all have something going on with Gray. These side stories had me a little confused as they didn’t transition well into the main story. She has twin aunts who at one point in the story play a big part, and then they just fade into the background. Her relationship with Nathan isn’t very clear to me as to what they are. I actually found their relationship more interesting than the one between Gray and Daniel, and wanted to read more about them. She does not have a good relationship with her father, which we find out is due to a tragedy in their past. This was one of the better situations in the book for me. It made sense as to why Gray is the way she is.
Gray and Daniel’s relationship is very slow progressing. It definitely did not end where I thought it was going to. This book also ended on somewhat of a cliffhanger. This was, for sure, an interesting read.

**ARC provided for an honest review**

Compulsive by Lia Fairchild was an incredible book that had me hooked from page 1! I was unable to put it down from beginning to end and found myself completely engrossed, while feeling like I was visually seeing the whole thing play out thanks to the amazing writing style of Ms. Fairchild. It is a wonderful story that starts out dealing with the personal demons of one woman, Gray, who has had to endure many years of hurt, betrayal, self-loathing, and loss. Something that all of us have had to experience at one time or another.

Her journey begins, with the bad decisions she makes, how they affect her, and the people around her. She is a woman, who is lost and tries to fill the voids in her life by compulsively lying. You experience the struggle within her which immediately compels you to empathize and sympathize with her. She is a woman who at the core has a good heart and makes you want to root for her. She is fragile, but strong, serious, but funny.

Along the way she encounters Daniel, who after their first meeting it seems they will probably never see each other again. However, circumstances that involve important people in each of their lives, throw them together and from the word go you feel the electricity between them. Daniel, is the kind of man who seems to have it all together, a sister and niece who love him, a booming career, confidence, and of course good looks. You quickly learn that he has his own personal demons and is fumbling his way through them. There is a tug and pull between Gray and Daniel of what they want and what is right. Daniel knows that they shouldn’t be together in his mind, but his heart tells a different story.

“One Day…You’re going to rise above your circumstances.
