This is THE DEFINITIVE SOURCE on the topic of The Network Time Protocol (NTP).
It is written by the person who originally designed NTP. What more proof do you need that this is THE BOOK on the topic. Period.
It is written much like a textbook, and is suitable for use in classroom and training environments. However, one can also pick it up and read it cover to cover as I did and come away much enlightened. Granted, some (ok, most) of the mathematics in some portions of the tome are well beyond my schooling, but it is written in such a way that you can get the idea of the concept without having to revisit a lot of long-forgotten math.
This book has a proud home on my short-list of books that occupy the bookshelf of manuals that I keep by my computer. I look forward to revisiting some of the portions of the book with a math wizard and have some of the math, graphs, and concepts explained to me further, but that is my failing, not the book's. It would be nice if, say in the foreword, Mr. Mills let the reader know which math courses (and at what level) would be most helpful for understanding the amazing amount of information available in his book.
I am eagerly trying out examples and testing configurations listed in the book (in a sandbox-type environment, of course) and learning more through the experiments.
If you are looking for a quick-and-dirty "how-to get NTP up and running quickly" guide, this isn't it. However, if you are in ANY way involved or responsible for making accurate and precise time available to your network, or to the Internet at large, this is a MUST READ. You must be able to understand what settings and configurations have which consequences; not only for your own configuration, but also for the community of time servers available through the Internet.
Bravo, Dr. Mills! This is a rare example of consolidating total and complete knowledge of a topic.
