Computer Networks, 5/e is appropriate for Computer Networking or Introduction to Networking courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, CIS, MIS, and Business Departments.

Tanenbaum takes a structured approach to explaining how networks work from the inside out. He starts with an explanation of the physical layer of networking, computer hardware and transmission systems; then works his way up to network applications. Tanenbaum's in-depth application coverage includes email; the domain name system; the World Wide Web (both client- and server-side); and multimedia (including voice over IP, Internet radio video on demand, video conferencing, and streaming media. Each chapter follows a consistent approach: Tanenbaum presents key principles, then illustrates them utilizing real-world example networks that run through the entire book—the Internet, and wireless networks, including Wireless LANs, broadband wireless and Bluetooth. The Fifth Edition includes a chapter devoted exclusively to network security. The textbook is supplemented by a Solutions Manual, as well as a Website containing PowerPoint slides, art in various forms, and other tools for instruction, including a protocol simulator whereby students can develop and test their own network protocols.

Classic. No TCP/IP in a Networking book, For REAL!

I am fascinated with Computer Networks. Can you find a book which does not have much about TCP or IP in modern world? Well the first edition of the classic Tanenbaum book has no reference or very little to IP and very little on TCP. Because this was written in 1980 and published in 1981. I got this as a collectible and it was in like new concept. I have read Edition 2 as part of undergrad coursework and that had significant difference. I read Edition 5 for work related purpose in 2012 and it was way different. I wanted to own Edition 1 and grabbed it. Tanenbaum retired in 2014 from teaching position and his fans and networking fans will love this book.

Fantastic for those with pre-existing interest

Plenty of the reviews already point out specific features of the book. I wanted to illuminate the mentality necessary to appreciate this book. In my opinion, this book is not meant to *establish interest* in networks for the average student. It is meant to present a fantastic swathe of knowledge to those *already interested*. This is why there are reviews that say its boring and dry and then reviews that say its one of the best books they had at engineering school. The appreciative reviewer likely already had interest in networking, or similar subjects, whereas the unappreciative reviewer probably wasn't too enthused by the subject matter!

This is not a knock on the reviewers who rated it poorly, but rather an attempt to ward off those who don't have preliminary interest from buying this book. If you already have the interest, this a fantastic reference source. For those looking for a first course in networking, I would tend to recommend Kurose and Ross over this book for its more accessible wording and topic coverage. This is still a nice one to have in the collection though.

Got this book to quickly learn some computer network fundamentals for my job at a startup. I come from a signal processing/communication background but didn't have that much experience with network stuff -- after reading some reviews online this seemed to be the best book to learn from. I've gone through a bunch of the initial chapter already and this book is great. It's fascinating to learn about the Internet, TCP/IP, and the history of all these things. This will be invaluable for my work. One complaint is that the 4th edition was published in 2002 so it's already a bit dated. But there's a new 5th edition out this year -- that will probably update alot of the material hopefully. Also, the coverage of wireless is a bit spotty. It covers 802.11, but I wanted to see some coverage of cellular broadband as well -- i.e. 3G, LTE, WiMax. Clearly the latter were not around in 2002 -- but maybe they'll be covered in the new edition? In short, a phenomenal book to learn the fundamentals of networking theory. Great for self learning esp if you have a technical background.

Very informative book - a little expensive

Back in the days, being a computer science student, I had to read the 3rd version of this book, and I found it very helpful. Since then the book went through some significant changes (as did the computer networking industry in whole. This book makes a great job keeping current and make a robust (and sometime complicated) subject digestible.

I do think the book is a little over-priced. Also, although it was said to come in "new" conditions, there are small bumps and wrinkles on the cover.

Tanenbaum does it again -- the communucations bible

Tanenbaum has overhauled his second edition to take into account the massive shift to Internetworks and the IP protocol. As usual, he does an excellent job of elucidating the subtleties of the technology while maintaining his witty style.

The book's key strength is that it combines solid theoretical underpinnings and clear explanations with consideration of the non-technical aspects of networking. These include market acceptance (some wise words on why ISDN failed, for example), the politics of "standards" and day-to-day pragmatic "getting it done" issues.

Tanenbaum's broader consideration enables the book to avoid the trap of becoming an unworldly academic text. It gives "Computer Networks" its licence to function as an indispensable everyday working reference.

I work in the communications/networking industry and keep this book handy. I lend it to colleagues to photocopy the odd section, and they always end up buying their own copy. Enough said!

I gave this book a 9 for including some of the old and dying technologies that lack even instructional value, at the expense of newer technologies that are seeing wide deployment. Grist for the fourth edition, I guess :-)
