The first chapters in this book cover the basics, concepts and associated math: probability, queuing theory, stochastic processes and Petri nets. This foundational material is clearly presented and cover all of the key elements of performance analysis (and capacity planning). The remainder of the book applies the concepts and techniques to analyzing architectures, operating system and DBMS and network components.
The final two chapters cover system modeling project ideas and how to use the performance evaluator application that is on the CD ROM that comes with the book. I haven't fully exercised this application, so will refrain from commenting on it. It is not needed to use the book.
Overall, this book is sufficiently technical and detailed to give all of the essential knowledge needed for solid performance and capacity management. If I had to choose between Jain's book cited above or this one, this is the one I'd pick because of its relevance to contemporary systems.
That's the impression one gets from reading Fortier/Michel's "Computer Systems Performance Evaluation and Prediction." Lots of little dollops of information excerpted (without attribution) from the books listed in the "Bibliography" section -- all paraphrased and strung together. In fact, anyone familiar with the titles in this book's Bibilography will be able to tell where everything from.
I think the only new material in this volume is the performance profiling of real operating systems in chapter 13. In this case, the authors attributed the work - to people who appear to have been their students. In my opinion, the data collection was probably assigned as a class project for their students and then used in this book.
Another reviewer has said that this volume is an updated version of Jain's work. I disagree. Jain actually knows what he's talking about. Fortier/Michel seem like they needed to publish something in a hurry; and this volume was the result. It's completely useless both as a textbook and as a reference for actual practitioners.
Recommendation: Stick to Jain's book or the works by Menasce to learn about system modelling. Fortier/Michel's book is a waste of paper.
