Conan the Barbarian (also known as Conan the Cimmerian) is a fictional sword and sorcery hero who originated in pulp fiction magazines and has since been adapted to books, comics, several films (including Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer), television programs (cartoon and live-action), video games, role-playing games and other media

Conan is a Cimmerian. From Robert E. Howard's writings (The Hyborian Age among others) it is known that the Cimmerians were based on the Celts or Gaels. He was born on a battlefield and is the son of a village blacksmith. Conan matured quickly as a youth and, by age fifteen, he was already a respected warrior who had participated in the destruction of the Aquilonian outpost of Venarium. After its demise, he was struck by wanderlust and began the adventures chronicled by Howard, encountering skulking monsters, evil wizards, tavern wenches, and beautiful princesses. He roamed throughout the Hyborian Agenations as a thief, outlaw, mercenary, and pirate. As he grew older, he began commanding larger units of men and escalating his ambitions. In his forties, he seized the crown of the tyrannical king of Aquilonia, the most powerful kingdom of the Hyborian Age, having strangled the previous ruler on the steps of the throne. Conan's adventures often result in him performing heroic feats, though his motivation for doing so is largely to protect his own survival or for personal gain.

I love the Conan stories

I love the Conan stories, but I guess you get what you pay for? I wish I had read the other one-star reviews instead of just seeing 4+ stars overall and clicking "buy."

My complaint is that some of the stories are missing random chapters for whatever reason. The first story, "The Phoenix on the Sword," contains 3 chapters...out of 5 that were written. So you get to the end of chapter 3 with nothing resolved, and suddenly you're on a new story. Why would an editor approve this? The next story, "The Scarlet Citadel," is similarly missing Chapter 2 (out of 5 total).

I haven't yet looked to see if other stories are missing chapters, but be forewarned that if you purchase this version, you'll have to either look online or else buy *another* version if you want to actually read some of these tales in their entirety.

It is difficult to beat Conan

I note that a number of reviewers have noted there are missing chapters in some of these stories. Of this I have no doubt but I will say that this recent version I purchased was complete so apparently, at least in the copy I received, this problem has been fixed. It should also be noted that Amazon, per usual, has mixed different version and printing of this book all into one bad, ergo we have reviews of not only hard copies, but also Kindle and even the comic book version. This is bad.

The tales of Conan have been around for at least 100 years now and are as popular these days as when they were first published – possibly more popular in many ways. I have, over the years, collected all of the Conan books, both those written by Robert E. Howard (the uncut, and unedited versions) as well as all the stories written by other authors of which Howard had nothing to do with. I must say that the original stories by Howard are far superior to those which followed by other authors.

Conan is a primal force; force which was written in an age where political correctness was nota big consideration and racism was prevalent. New readers need to be aware of this and not be shocked at some of the situation which appear on the pages of these stories. Just keep in mind that Howard was a leader in this genre and thousands of fantasy books have been patterned after his work over the years. Writing, like everything else evolves with time...fantasy writing is no different.

I love having these stories on my Kindle as well as on my bookshelves. As I age an my eyes get weaker year by year I find it comforting to know that with a flick of the finger I can change fonts and keep on reading.

I didn't see this anywhere on the book's Amazon page but this book is either abridged or is just sloppily edited and missing chapters. The short story Phoenix on the Sword is missing the last two of the 5 chapters! Avoid!

It's Conan. He defeats all enemies. When he should be dead, he's not! If his enemy is stronger than him, he's smarter than the enemy and tricks him. If the enemy is smarter than Conan, Conan simply smashes him, with his superior strength. These stories are adventures, written solely for vicarious pleasure, Every woman wants him; every man wants to be him. I think we really don't have enough of this kind of writing anymore. I think that's why these adaptations of graphic novels are doing so well--they're written for the thrill of it, for the fun of it. And that's what these stories are--fun..

The first book, the Phoenix on the Sword, only has the first three chapters of a five chapter story. You know how annoying it is to get into a story and then it cuts off abruptly and you realize you now have to go read the rest on Project Gutenberg? Annoying enough for me to leave a one star review. Do not buy!

Lots of fun, fast stories

I just read the first 25 percent of this centenary edition of the complete chronicles of Conan, and found no typographical errors. It seemed like a good compromise between the complete Conan Kindle books that sell for a dollar or so, which buyers complain are full of typographical errors and have paragraphs omitted as well, and the very pricey three-volume Conan Kindle collection that gets excellent reviews.

This version has careful handling, a good introduction and a good afterward. It doesn't say whether the stories are Howard's original drafts or magazine versions, except of course that it has many of his unpublished stories, and those have to be originals. Whatever they are, the complete ones are satisfyingly plotted and hold together very well.

They're great, and great fun to read.

Just by way of making a small independent comment, one that does not affect my five-star liking for the book overall, I read "Queen of the Black Coasts," which some reviewers say is one of his best, and I wasn't sure it should rank that high. There are a couple of reasons. The heroine's final action is the point of the story, and it's foreshadowed plenty, both in what she herself says and in the poems that precede each chapter. So when that dramatic action finally comes, we're expecting it, and I think it's not surprising enough.

Also, Conan's position in this story is a little ethically questionable. I know he would only drink another bottle of wine and roar with laughter at hearing this, but although he's always a little outside the law, in "Queen of the Black Coast" he joins up with pirates who have just killed all his shipmates, shipmates he had made friends with, and he continues with the pirates as they plan to slaughter every boat crew they run across and steal all their money besides. Usually, he has a little bit more, I don't know, concern for innocent people's lives than that.

"The Tower of the Elephant," also much recommended, was totally great, I thought,

Every story has at least a tremendous amount of good fast action. They give a good feeling for how some people daydreamed in the early days of the Great Depression, too I don't think anyone can go far wrong with this collection.
