Much as I hated the story it revealed, I loved this book. In Rothbard's usual impeccable style, fully supported from original sources, this fifth volume of the series reveals how the leaders of the Revolution: Adams, Washington and especially Hamilton, tried to use the mandate to improve the Articles of Confederation to overturn it altogether and create an American version of a monarchy, replete with a king (President for life) and aristocracy. This palace coup was partially deflected by the stout resistance of some of the States whose delegates were true to the principles of the revolution: inherent liberties and a sovereign citizen. The royalists (federalists) were able to retain vague language (general welfare clause, supremacy clause, etc.) which the government has successfully used to expand its powers far beyond the limits the Revolution had been fought for. The last-minute addition of the poorly-named bill of rights (it should be the "thou shalt nots") is the only thing that has stood between the American people and utter tyranny for more than 200 years. This is a story that everybody should know, but one that the educational and political establishment would be happy that no one should know. Read all five volumes, please!

This is not the book for beginners who still worship federalists and the constitution. If you still feel like its the greatest document that was divinely written to bless this nation, you will probably write of Rothbard as a lunatic. But his research and facts in all his works are beyond reproach. So if you are ready to learn true history, and have a healthy amount of skepticism, this book will open your eyes to the shenanigans and misdeeds that were done in order to get the constitution ratified. Rothbard is known for his economics, but I think this is one of his greatest works.

This book is detailed, well written, and factual history. A must read for those who desire the truth concerning the Articles of Confederation, Constitution of 1787, debates, and how many of the Federalists relied on propaganda to institute an eventual national government which is antithetical to the principles of limited government.

It was a great book. Perhaps not quite up to the standards of his previous works, but then the author couldn't make any revisions due to having died, so cut the man some slack. A unique take on the history of the period that is not to be found elsewhere!

A brilliant account of how civil liberties were curtailed from the very outset of our country’s forming by our founding fathers in favor of a strong, elitist central government.

I haven't read this yet but I have gone through the previous 4 volumes ( by audio) and my life was transformed. Rothbard gets his readers to think of things in a way that allows a more total picture of his subject. I was so disappointed to reach the end of the last volume years ago and find that it stopped at a most crucial time in American history. That's why I was so excited when I first heard this new volume was coming. I am certain it will be another eye opener. Much thanks to those who made this happen!

Great Book!

This book rounds up the whole conceived in liberty series perfectly! Although one can easily read it if one hasn‘t read part I-IV. The only slight critique is that this version printed by amazon is not the same height as the hardcover version I-IV printed by the Mises Institute.
