From the manufacturer
The sport of Nordic skiing, now available to everyone.
The Concept2 SkiErg makes the sport of Nordic skiing available to everyone. Long recognized as delivering one of the toughest workouts around, Nordic skiing develops both strength and endurance and exercises the legs as well as the arms and core. The SkiErg can be used for both double pole and classic alternating arm technique.
The SkiErg uses the same flywheel resistance and electronic monitoring systems as Concept2's Indoor Rowers, the proven choice of rowing athletes around the world since 1981, so you can rest assured that the machine is made to last. As well as being durable and well built, the SkiErg is sophisticated too, with an advanced monitor that provides immediate, accurate performance data.
Whether you’re an elite cross-country skier looking to improve your poling power, a weekend enthusiast wanting to get into shape for the ski season, or just someone looking for a great workout, the SkiErg will help you achieve your goals.
The SkiErg can be either mounted on a wall (hardware included) or used with an optional floor stand (sold separately).
Performance Monitor 5
The Performance Monitor is what sets the Concept2 SkiErg apart from other cross-country training devices: sophisticated yet easy to use, it allows you to accurately assess your output, monitor your progress, and compare your scores with others. Each SkiErg comes with our most advanced Performance Monitor, the PM5.
Flywheel and Damper
The SkiErg responds to your effort on every pull, so you are in full control of your exertion and resistance at all times. The spiral damper allows you to quickly adjust the airflow to the flywheel, so you can change the feel of the pull to suit your preference. Whether you want your workout to feel like you’re on flat terrain or an uphill climb, the SkiErg will respond to your needs.
Ergonomic Strapless Handles
The SkiErg’s ergonomic, strapless handles provide for a comfortable, secure grip and won’t absorb sweat so they stay dry in high use settings. They are also suitable for all hand sizes as they require no adjustment.

Prepare to set aside about 30-60mins for assembly. I strongly recommend having actual wrenches or sockets instead of just using a crescent or monkey wrench. If you have a basic set of wrenches and sockets you'll be fine. Make sure your review the instructions to ensure you mount everything right the first time. You won't mess anything up but you can definitely waste some time. The box is heavy so have your delivery guy put it where you want to assemble it if you are concerned with carrying it around. I strongly recommend going with the optional base that you can also purchase via amazon. It seems like you are really adding to the footprint of the SkiErg but the area it adds is area you need to dedicate anyway just to use the device. Plus it gives a space for your sweat to fall. Oh yeah, you will be sweating! I leave a small pool of sweat once I complete my workout.
5000m - This is the standard workout most people do. If you can get anywhere close to 20mins you are a hero!
30mins - Pace yourself. It's not like a 30min run at all
10000m - Brutal - True test of your conditioning. Under 45mins is respectable. 40mins and you are a machine.
500m with 1min rest intervals - This is a great way to get started or to mix up your routine. Gives you some time to recover. You should aim for 5-10secs less 500m times than your average when doing 5000m or 30min workouts.
1min sprint 1 min rest (or some variation) - This would be your HIIT workout. It's not a pre-programmed workout so you will need to go into the "new workout" area and program this. I have been doing this one recently and find it very challenging. I shoot for 250m every 1min sprint and do that as long as I can. Then usually do a few extra just to burn a few more calories.
This product is mobile, light and like all other products from Concept2, very well built. Unlike the rower, the footprint is smaller if you have ceilings high enough - even with the stand and is ready to use at any
time - requiring no setup. It's not as loud as the rower.
I would strongly recommend this product to people who need or desire adaptive cardio. In many ways it is better than a recumbent bike, another one of my favorite machines for straightforward cardio - because it is adaptable and lighter. You can use this machine at any fitness level, unlike the rower, which is a bit much if you are very out of shape. I can't say this enough - this is the most adaptable piece of cardio equipment I have seen. You can stand, sit, kneel, alternate legs, arms etc...and get a good workout. You can choose to have a relaxing long sitting workout or go very intense.
If you are looking for an indoor cardio workout, strongly consider this.
I've had it since mid February and use it 6 times a week along with using my rower 6 times a week. I do a workout on both in one sitting. Typically some time of intervals, 2K rower, 2K skierg for a number of reps. It's the perfect compliment to the rower. The rower is almost entirely posterior driven and the skierg is almost entirely anterior driven. The rower is about 70% legs, the skierg about 90% upper body. Since adding the skierg into my workouts I've increased my weekly meters, feel less fatigued and noticed an increase in upper body strength and muscle mass. I haven't needed or felt the need to lift any weights since getting the skierg.
I also have some rotator cuff damage in my left shoulder and was worried the skierg would aggravate it. No worries! My shoulder (both actually) feel better than they have for a long time.
Buying this is one of the best decisions I've made when it comes to exercise. The combination of the rower and the skierg is unbeatable for a complete total body workout that is efficient, burns a ton of calories and increases strength at the same time.
