I think Conditions of My Parole was my most anticipated release this year. It was a curious album that was in the back of my mind constantly. After hearing Man Overboard, I was a little concerned because I felt that it was a little to straight forward. I really like that song and like many people here are saying all the songs on here are favorites they just change based on your mood. But, yeah I wasn't quite sold. Then I heard the teases they released here on amazon and thought, WOW, it is so layered and deep and varied! I couldn't contain my excitement! Then they streamed the whole album on Spin and I couldn't stop listening to the album. I had to keep listening to every track, from start to finish over and over. It had it's hooks in me.
Conditions of My Parole is much like Maynard James Keenan has said it is, like Twin Peaks, in the desert. Anyone who has every seen Twin Peaks will get the refference instantly. The OST to that series is deep and moody, slow blues and mystery. Murder, occultism, and shameless affairs abound. I think that this new album does retain some of that feel, only with a sort of backwards Jerome hill billy sort of way. Tracks flow seamlessly between eachother, and there are huge peaks and gaping valleys to be discovered here. I love all the tracks here but the major standout tracks would be: Tiny Monsters, The Valley, Man Overboard, Horizons, Monsoons, Conditions of My Parole, and Oceans. But there really isn't a bad track on the album. Also, Carina Round is amazing, simply amazing on this album, her duets are beautiful and perfect. If I had to site one criticism it would have to be The Weaver, it just feels thrown together, and lacking any sort of direction. I know a lot of people who consider that their favorite track, but I just don't get it, and it grates on my after a bit. But, that is it, the album is a perfect album for a autumn drive through the mountains, or road tripping across the desert. If you're a fan of independant music, a fan of anything MJK, you'll probably love this. For the doubters, give it time. I believe this one is a masterpiece.
Also, I saw them live last Wednesday Nov 9th in SLC, and they put on a fantastic show, most of the set was from Conditions of My Parole, but they did throw in Queen B, Rev 22:20 (sung alone by Carina Round I should add, it was fantastic!!)Polar Bear, V*g*na Mine, Sour Grapes, and a handfull of other classic tracks, sadly no The Mission though, I was really hoping for that one live. :( Something I found interesting, you know how on the track Conditions of My Parole where he says "Sweet jesus don't let the judge release me, what if she's a zombie or a dracula and tries to bleepin' eat me.." Well he edits himself in concert too, what is up with that? I'm really curious as to why he did that. Anyways, it was my second time seeing Puscifer and just as good if not better than the first time. Carina Round was an amazing opener, she pretty much stole the show, seriously, if you dig her vox, please do yourself a favor and pick up her Things You Should Know EP here on Amazon.
That's about it, keep supporting indie music!
Peace,
Dal.
