Confess started out *brilliantly* ... amazing concept, writing, and engaging characters. It had me hooked & I prematurely declared I was going to need to immediately reread it because there was just so much to hold onto.

Owen was phenomenally written. His intellect, quirkiness, thoughts, and personality won me over immediately. The concept of the confessions inspiring art work ... brilliant. The fact that they are true life confessions submitted by readers ... brilliant. The inclusion of the artwork ... also brilliant.

The initial interactions between the characters was *amazing*. Owen, Harrison, Auburn, and her roommate Emory pulled me right in and I loved their behavior, dialogue, texts, and insights.

But then a funny thing happened ...

As the story progressed, the chemistry and all the things that pulled me in started to dissipate.

Owen really didn't sound like the brilliant and quirky Owen (in thoughts or dialogue). Auburn started feeling like the all too familiar heroine in NA. There was less and less interaction between characters that won us over, and so the story started to lose me as people felt less smart, less quirky, and more two dimensional.

Owen the artist wained ... what was so interesting about his studio, process, the confessions, and shows just felt like evaporated from the story. I wanted more than one Thursday ... or be brought more into his process ... or know how that would affect Auburn and him in a relationship. We had an amazing taste that set up such possibility ... and that whole aspect of the story simply went dormant.

I also wanted a better bead on Auburn. I liked her ... I just didn't completely know her. Who did she really want to be (as a person, career, or what lit her fire beyond men)?

★★★ 3.5 stars ★★★

When it comes to creativity, individuality, and some of the most memorable dialogue, there is no one person that comes close to Colleen Hoover. Not to mention the consistency. Here is what I honest to God thought about Confess....

I started off absolutely loving it. Colleen always manages to give each and every one of her novels a thing, something special. It may be a small thing, but Colleen Hoover has perfected the art of turning the insignificant, significant. She gives everything meaning, and she does this effortlessly. This book was no exception. The confessions, the artwork...it was genius. The entire concept screamed Colleen Hoover. I also loved the idea of fate, and the connection between Owen and Auburn. A connection Owen chooses not to share. True, that decision was just a very small detail of the plot, but it’s the weight of those small details that makes each story Colleen creates real, special, unique, and believable.

What I did have some difficulty loving (and what kept me right at about 3.5 stars) was the plot.

It ran away.

It started off really good, the conflict building between Auburn and Trey. Trey’s shared history with Owen. All of this was beautifully woven together. Even Owen's backstory intricately deepened his connection with Auburn by linking their own unique tragedies. Not by sharing the same experiences, but by sharing the same pain.

Loss.

However, throw all of that in with drugs, arrests, shady cops and legal battles, and you have a whole damn lot going on all at once. It made it hard to get the development any one issue needed when there was so much to juggle. I was overwhelmed, and it took a little away from the realism.

An original and intriguing love story that whetted my appetite, but unfortunately left me unfulfilled.

I couldn’t get my jumbled thoughts in order, so I recorded myself, and then transcribed them. Here they are:

I’ve been sitting on this review for a couple of days now, because I just didn’t know how I felt about this story. Actually, if I’m honest, I know how I felt about the story; I just didn’t like how I felt. In general, Confess left me underwhelmed.

I don’t mean that in a purely negative way. I mean that quite literally. I think that once again, even though I tried to avoid it, the hype killed it for me. I believe that even though Confess had all the right ingredients, I felt like something was missing from it. I felt like it was missing heart. I do think that it’s probably her best written work – technically. I liked the prose (especially in the beginning), and I saw her growth as a writer, but it still felt disingenuous to me. It didn’t feel true. I didn’t feel like I was reading a Colleen Hoover book, and I hate saying that, because I’m always saying that I want authors to try new things, and I try not to judge them on their previous work. I don’t think that I’m judging her on her previous work, I just think that this book felt like someone else wrote it. I started feeling that way about a 1/4 in, and I continued feeling that way for most of the story.

Let’s break down the plot: So, this story was about a Auburn and Owen. I will say that I was engaged in the beginning. I loved how they met. I was very much intrigued by the secrets they were both keeping. I loved the serendipitous element to their first meeting, and I really loved their chemistry early on.
