In this intensely personal narrative, Augustine relates his rare ascent from a humble Algerian farm to the edge of the corridors of power at the imperial court in Milan, his struggle against the domination of his sexual nature, his renunciation of secular ambition and marriage, and the recovery of the faith his mother Monica had taught him during his childhood.

Chadwick renders the details of Augustine's conversion in clear, modern English. We witness the future saint's fascination with astrology and with the Manichees, and then follow him through scepticism and disillusion with pagan myths until he finally reaches Christian faith. A beautiful biography by the canonized saint. I love the insight it gives into the mind and soul of Augustine, and the secret changes that occur in possibly every man at some point or another in his life.
Another thing I loved about this book was a look into the regular life of a man from the 4th century. Few well-known books have such honest depictions of what life in that era was like.
Confessions is a great autobiography, and this translation is very adequate.

Difficult reading in the language and style of the time in which written. A very famous person in the annals of Christianity but one might not discern exactly why from this text. It might be better to read a biography assessing the man's impact and summarizing his activities and their importance to his legacy.
This reader is still fighting through the language and syntax. A long battle is predicted. Perhaps the work will be reassessed after the smoke clears.

offers an easily-comprehended view of St. Augustine's conversion and philosophy in modern
English. What he wrote about in the fourth Century is synchronous with the issues 17 centuries
later.

I am still reading St Augustine's Confessions. I especially appreciate the translator's modern English. I chose it as my Lenten reading and I read a few chapters a day. His faith was incredible and his struggle with his weaknesses exascerbated by his former Manechean heretical beliefs that his sinful body was somehow detached from his sinful will. Finally he realized the body and soul are one in the actions of a human being and with the grace of God and his mother St Monica's prayers and his strong desire to know the truth and find God won out. This is very powerful reading and gives everyone hope thru faith. This is what the secular world needs. The secular heresy is as evil as the Manechean allowing evil to be put forth as liberty when it is the worst slavery of mankind. reviewed by Valerie Choudhury
