The idea for the story came to me as I was going to sleep one night in October of 2012, and I remember rolling over in bed to write the concept down, as I had done with countless other ideas. At the time, I simply wondered "what would happen if I wrote a book about dating advice in the framework of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol?" The classic is one of my all-time favorites (especially The Muppets version), and I thought it would be an absolute blast to write a parody-work or literary remix based around it.
And it was. But as I started to write A Dating Carol, as it was originally known, I started to realize two things: A) I didn't have quite enough dating experience at the time to posit myself as some sort of expert and to write a whole book about it and B) there was a lot more to self-improvement that I wanted Ethan to learn in the story than how to talk to women in a bar.
In short, the story is a summation of everything I have learned in my own personal development so far in my twenties. With the help of his late best friend's ghost and the three other spirits that visit Ethan, A Confidence Carol touches on everything from body language, dealing with rejection, a healthier dating mentality, to pursuing your passion, with plenty of pop culture and subtle literary references thrown in (Prufrock, anyone?). I am very pleased with the way the story turned out, and all I hope is that the reader can find it relateable, poignant, and inspiring."
