From the Back Cover

If you . . .
don't know what to say,
feel like you can't start a conversation,
or wish you could speak up more often,
. . . you might be an introvert.

If you . . .
usually dominate the conversation,
can wax eloquent about almost any subject,
or find yourself talking more than listening,
. . . you might be an extrovert.

Either way, with the right attitude and a little know-how, you can excel in the art of confident conversation.

For most people, great conversation doesn't come naturally. Whether you're an introvert who agonizes over what to say or an extrovert who has no trouble talking--but forgets to listen--you'd probably like to improve your conversational skills. By harnessing the strengths of your personality style and employing practical tools for success, you will be able to start, continue, and end a conversation; listen more effectively; be an explorer, not a supplier; and enjoy yourself in the process!

"Mike is a student of the art of communication. He will make a good teacher for every reader of Confident Conversation."--John Ortberg, author and pastor, Menlo Park Presbyterian Church

"Does anyone really know how to communicate well? Mike does, and this is a great tool to develop more intimate relationships and deeper connections in any situation."--Steve Arterburn, New Life Ministries

I read this book to simply get some new ideas. Most of the book is really about commonsense and, for me, just reaffirmed what I had already thought. I did however take away a few bits of wisdom that I have been using and some interesting truths that have given me a better insight into myself. And that, really, is all I wanted to take away after reading this book.

Don't expect a life changing read. If you get this book, you may walk away with a deeper understanding of what you already knew, but might not have realized.

Some people might look at the title of this book and think they don't need this book. But, as the author states, communication skills are just like a house re-modeling--some people need a complete renovation, others just need a paint touch-up of their skills.

The book is pretty inexpensive, but has given me some new ideas in how I conduct myself in social communication situations.

Just think of how much money you spend on improving your golf score or your musical skills through lessons. How much do you spend on bettering your communication skills?

This book isn't going to blow you away or anything, especially if you are above average with your communication skills. It is a good refresher though and i recommend it to most people. It really reinforces more than re-teaches. I liked it and have seen my conversation skills improved with a few easy steps. It is just a different way of looking at introverts and extroverts and how to communicate with each and more importantly how to improve your communication.

If I had to break this book down into two principles, I'd say Dr. Bechtle emphasizes authenticity inquisitiveness.

For the first, whether you're in introvert, an extrovert, or somewhere in between (like me), embrace the way God made you and learn to use your unique strengths to your advantage. For the second, every person has something cool to share. It's your goal as a conversation partner to politely discover it.

This approach - emphasizing authenticity and inquisitiveness - gives you permission to relax and be yourself, and simultaneously turns a potentially stressful activity into a spirited treasure hunt. Apart from much more fully unpacking this core idea, the book offers many excellent specific techniques.

For example, Dr. Bechtle's advice on strategically using open and closed-ended questions is excellent, and it works. Just yesterday, rather than asking my son how his day was, I asked him to tell me about his day, which led to a much richer and more meaningful interaction. Rather than simply replying, "Pretty good," he recounted how he'd played with his sister, how he'd helped Mommy around the house, and how excited he was about his first football practice.

Great book - thanks to the author for all the excellent advice!

I just read this book. It does a good job crafting its message based on your own personality type. It also gives you a good mental framework to help you handle the less than great conversations you will have as you use the ideas from this book in your conversations. I have found this book to be very helpful.

Great information on being able to talk with ease and confidence in different situations. For job seekers, networking is the most effective way of finding employment. Being able to speak with people while being centered is crucial when presenting yourself in the best possible light. Mike Bechtle does a great job in explaining the "how to"s of confident communication.

When I first saw this book, the cover didn't really catch me. ( Yes I know you're not supposed to judge a book by its cover.) And honestly I thought it would be another book from an extrovert who wanted to show all of us who don't know how to have confident conversations how to be like him. But it was free for kindle so I figured, why not? I've always struggled in conversations, so I got it. A few days after I got it I opened it in kindle and read a few pages and... enjoyed them. So I kept reading, and kept discovering more and more practical tips on, not how to become an extrovert, but how to "embrace the personality we have and explore ways to capitalize on it." You don't have to be an extrovert to have a meaningful conversation! This book has some very helpful and practical tools for introverts and extroverts alike. I would very much recommend this book to anyone who feels lacking in conversational skills. (Introverts and extroverts alike.)
