If you want to continue living in your own small tribal bubble, listening to the echo chamber of your social network and gazing at your own reflection in the fun house mirror of cable news ... then do not read Confident Pluralism.

If on the other hand you love America, buy 10 copies right now and pass them out to your friends and enemies.

This book isn't long, but it's outstanding. It's easy to find despondency with the current state of our government and national conversation (on a whole host of different issues). Inazu doesn't take that route; instead, he focuses on what he terms "confident pluralism," or the idea that while we needn't give up our deeply held views on issues of importance, we must find a way to live together despite those differences. His argument takes two forms. On one hand, he argues that we need a stronger constitutional framework that protects the freedoms of religion, speech, and assembly. Additionally, he argues that we as a society need to embrace attributes that enable conversations and relationships to happen despite deep differences. It's well worth the read (particularly given its length), and in modern-day America, it is essential for some version of Inazu's vision to be realized.

Absolutely riveting, brilliantly written and pioneering work, which really help me get a framework into my head about how to think about the controversies coming thick and fast around discrimination, rights, pluralism and religious liberty

if you're tired of the rancor and polarization that so often seem to be inevitable when discussing religious liberty in today's America, this book is a much-needed breath of fresh air. Scholarly yet practical, Inazu mixes legal analysis with humility to winsomely invite us to advocate for the conscience freedoms of those who disagree--even as he acknowledges the value of embracing our respective beliefs more deeply. Inazu compellingly articulates what America (and Americans) look like at her best.

Confident Pluralism addresses one of the largest issues Americans are dealing with today: the loss of unity and civility due to the ever-increasing partisan nature of the country. We've lost the ability to dialogue with people holding alternate viewpoints, cordoned ourselves into echo-chambers of news/opinion, and become increasingly isolated based on race/class/religion. The author does a fantastic job taking philosophical and academic concepts and making them accessible, through plenty of examples (including references to pop culture such as the TV show Parks and Recreation). He takes a stance on this critical issue without taking side - instead urging civility and understanding in concrete and practical ways.

The book also highlights the fragility of rights most Americans take for granted (speech, assembly, press, etc) with examples of Supreme Court rulings which erode protections for those seemingly sacred values.

A must read for anyone who is looking around at the culture and wondering "how did we get here, and how can we change this for the better?"
