Walid Phares has insights few others have. Raised in Lebanon, he needs no translator to understand both sides of the War against Future Jihad. He sees a need to confront the enemy in the battle for future minds. He shows clearly what the enemy can do wherever it might be unopposed. He also shows clearly the inconsistent opposition we offered up to the time of 2008 publication. It seems clear now that our opposition continued inconsistent into 2013. We reacted to incidents. Warnings he wrote about strategy, about taking our battle to the enemy, were in fact poorly heeded, which makes a current reading of those warnings all the more valuable. They were on the mark, and they remain on the mark, country by country.
I am an avid reader of Walid Phares. I see his recent books as a series on the battle for democracy. Confronting the Enemy was the second book, preceded by War of Ideas detailing enemy tactics, and followed in 2010 by a remarkable analysis of Coming Revolution which began to unfold in 2011 as the Arab Spring. He added warnings about supporting and protecting democratic urges in enemy areas. We also heeded those warnings inconsistently, country by country, so I feel his voice needs to be heard, speaking a few years back as well as speaking now.
