I was in the mood to read some of Confucius words of wisdom, and came across this selection, which pairs some of his quotes with those of two of his students as well as other philosophers.

This is not a page turner, this is a stop and reflect, then read a bit more kind of book. The philosophers included offer pearls of wisdom, from centuries gone by, that remain relevant and worthy of reflection.

trying to be generous with my rating. this is not a book for anyone seriously interested in learning about any of these amazing thinkers, i suppose the perspective of the writer is mildly interesting but it really seems as though his purpose is to attract readers who would typically be interested in reading books in the genre of new-age thinking or self-help subjects, and he basically interprets some selected texts from that general perspective. as someone who has studied these philosophers, i don't really find that his interpretation does minimal justice to their work, and there's very little of the actual work included in the book. maybe some readers who are unfamiliar with the original texts will find themselves motivated to read more deeply into the works after being exposed to them in this book, and if they do, i suspect that they'll be surprised to discover that there's much greater depth and value to them than what this slight book suggests with its largely superficial treatment.
