As a virtual lifelong fan of Teena Marie I must say that it is fantastic that she is still interested in putting out great music! The music on this album is a great balance of the ballads that I love to hear from her mixed in with a few hip hop references of today. Somehow when Teena sings a line about her man "poppin' his collar" at their wedding, it does not sound trite or like she's trying to hard to stay "down", it just sounds like the inimitable Lady T!
This album as others have mentioned is more in the vein of her last two releases in that the funky tunes that we love to hear from back in the day have been replaced by smoother r&b tracks. This isn't a bad thing because her songs still sound as relevant as anything that younger r&b divas are releasing (but better cause Teena can sing a lot of them off the planet).
The album gets off to a great start with 5 outstanding tracks:
THE PRESSURE f/ MC Lyte - I love how smooth both ladies sound on this track and the fact that the rapper doesn't overtake the track
CAN'T LAST A DAY f/ Faith Evans - love this duet. Teena's soaring vocals mixed with Faith Evans' laid back cool vocals
BABY I LOVE YOU - Lady Tee breaks out her rapping skills
EAR CANDY 101 - catchy lyrics & arrangement
LOVER'S LANE f/ Howard Hewett - wonderful pairing, it was great to hear Howard & Teena together
Other standouts to me are: MARRY ME, MILK N' HONEY (sung with her daughter, Alia Rose); YOU BABY; CONGO SQUARE; SOLDIER; MS CORETTA & THE ROSE N' THORN
Like I said, as a fan I appreciate the new music and think it's great that she is able to produce music that is still as relevant to me as the first songs of hers I ever heard!

Editorial Reviews
Internationally renowned singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Teena Marie, the 'Ivory Queen of Soul,' presents her 2009 album, a 16 song set showing she hasn't lost one bit of her edge. Like most of her classic albums, Congo Square cruises smoothly from Southern Soul and smoky Jazz to Dancefloor Funk. Features guest appearances from Faith Evans, George Duke, MC Lyte, Howard Hewitt and Shirley Murdock. Includes the new hit single 'Can't Last A Day' featuring Faith Evans.

I am really feeling this new album! I say this with a little surprise in my exclamation. I have been a long time fan, but haven't liked everything she's sung or written and that goes back to when she first came on the scene. Congo Square held my attention from beginning to end. I loved all the callobrations from MC LYTE to Faith Evans, Shirley Murdock to Rose LeBeau, whom I expect to hear from again in the future. Matter of fact, I'm going to purchase Sapphire because she's featured on that album as well.
The duet featuring Howard Hewett is great! It was one of my main reasons for investing in this album. Howard sounds as good as ever and they are good together. It is so refreshing to hear his voice. What I really like about this album is how cohesive the music is. It flows. The arrangements are nice and the rapping sounds good to me and it isn't overdone. I like to hear rap on Teena's work because she's one of the first artists that I heard combining rap and R&B. She's got her own style and I don't compare her to rapper's of today, since she was rapping long before. She's one of the ORIGINATOR'S. And, Teena packs a lot of songs onto her CD's. To wrap it up, this is one for the collection.

This is my first time listening to this cd as I am writing this review. What a wonderful experience to sit and bask in the beautiful voices on this album. Extremely well written all 16 tracks are an experience. Hopefully, Alia Rose will continue the legacy of wonderful r&b, so many artists can't really sing. But we know that she is very talented. Please purchase Beautiful and Sapphire too if you are new fan of Teena Marie.

Beautiful, introspective album with touching, candid lyrics, heartfelt duets, and pleasant, hooking melodies. Nothing is missing in this album in my opinion, I just miss Teena and wish she was able to write more songs and perform. However, this definitely keeps her alive as well as all her other work. My favorites songs include, Milk N' Honey, Ear Candy, Baby I Love You, etc... it just goes on and on. Listen to it, you won't regret it!

Love Teena Marie and was pleased that I was able to purchase her final CD before her death for an affordable price. I have two other CDs that Tenna Marie released that I purchased a long time ago.

I recieved this cd by "Lady T" a few weeks ago on time and in great condition from Amazon. Teena Marie was such a talented lady that I will truly miss, but her music will live on forever in my heart. She was always my fovorite since the day I heard one of hits "Lovergirl". She was truly incredible, and I don't think there will be someone like her for some time to come.

Contains some great work by a vastly missed soul genius. The title track is as good as anything Lady T ever did - and encapsulates her music perfectly.
What a voice! What a songwriter!
