"The most consistently rewarding of the recent anthologies focusing on Afro-American women's writing . . . " ―Modern Fiction Studies

" . . . successfully [exposes] the core of Black women's writing and confidently [places] it within the American literary tradition." ―Belles Lettres

Black women have been writing and publishing fiction for more than a century, yet little is known of their literary history, their influence on each other, or the significance of their work to the American literary tradition. All the contributors implicitly address the question of how this recovered tradition reshapes our understanding of American literature.

This pioneering book in women's fiction studies is worth purchase for its iconic role alone, but the essays point the way to a field which continues to mature, and arguably will be of great consequence as the US faces a year of deciding whether it will follow its first 'black President' with a Woman.

This book was referred to me and I am not sure why I thought it would be something more interesting however, it’s a little boring to me, but I’m sure for a novelist or literary writers. They will absolutely love it. Returning.

Books like this that have already been written in is kinda of a big deal. But because I need it I have just dealt with the negative. But when I think of used i think of maybe a Little worn but not written all up and through. I was excited to have the book but was disappointed with the inside.

This is a wonderful book that reaches to the core of Black women's writing and writings. Makes me proud to aspire to the ranks of Black women writing. It is also a great inspiration. Girl, You Can Do It!

Helped me understand ancestress Toni Cade Bambara's wonderful, the Salteaters.
