I purchased a thin piece of plyboard, and cut it to fit between the eye bolts and rings on the plastic board. I sanded and painted it black, then secured it to the bottom of the plastic board with heavy duty velcro, and it now works great. The security straps still need some work, but I'll figure it out.
It works as advertised.
The pad is sturdy and covered with nonslip material.
Adjustments are possible.
The harness is reasonably comfortable.
The pad is heavy, 0.5kg/17oz on its own.
Keeping the laptop's screen upright is poorly resolved.
Connect-A-Desk makes you look nerdy, but is actually effective in letting you work on a laptop in an upright position, standing or walking, freeing your hands from the need to support the laptop. One thing that is poorly resolved is the issue of preventing the screen from moving relative to the laptop when you move your body enough vigorously. There is some velcro strap thrown in as an afterthought to help you with this, and otherwise secure the laptop, but it is not effective. The pad upholding the laptop is quite sturdy, but at the price of being heavy.
I ended up sewing hoops and strap couplers to the regular case of my netbook, kicking off the Connect-A-Desk's pad, but exploiting its nice harness. Now I have the effectiveness of the holder without the redundant weight. I also added dedicated adjustable straps for holding the screen in an upright position. My arrangement is now worth 5* instead of 4*.
