When it comes to a church's volunteer ministries, the Pareto Principle seems to apply: 20 percent of church members do 80 percent of the work. This unbalanced ratio is both unbiblical, because all church members should be ministers, and inefficient, fostering burnout among the few and passivity and consumerism among the many.

Pastors and other church leaders who teach every-member ministry have solved the first problem, but the second problem often goes unsolved (or badly solved) because they don't have a system in place to move members into ministry.

Nelson Searcy's new book, Connect, outlines just such a system to "mobilize people for significant ministry" (30). Searcy is founding pastor of The Journey, a multisite church with locations in New York City and Boca Raton, Florida. He is also a prolific author and church consultant whose advice for pastors and church leaders can be accessed at ChurchLeaderInsights.com.

Searcy structures his advice for mobilizing people around four steps:

1. Clarify your theology of ministry (chs. 1, 2).
2. Create first-serve opportunities (chs. 3-5).
3. Cultivate a ministry ladder (chs. 6-8).
4. Celebrate and reproduce servants (chs. 9, 10).

His advice is empirically grounded, eminently practical, and systematic. The appendices include 40 pages of volunteer-related resources from The Journey. Readers can also register on his website for additional free resources.

The strength of this book is its presentation of a system for teaching voluntarism and recruiting, resourcing, and rewarding volunteers. The book's most controversial recommendation is letting non-believers volunteer at certain levels in your church's ministries.

I am currently going through Nelson Searcy's coaching network and have read 6 other books that Nelson has written. While every book that I have read has very practical and useful information I believe "Connect" is his best book yet. This book will be especially useful for every pastor who feels they are a "one-man show" (they must do everything in their church). I am buying a copy for everyone on our newly developed ministry team. I believe by implementing the system he explains in "Connect" we will see a substantial change in the number of volunteers in our church. I believe the book will bless you as well.

TITLE: Connect: How to Double Your Number of Volunteers
AUTHOR: Nelson Searcy
PUBLISHER: Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Books, 2012, (240 pages)

Have you ever wondered about the 80/20 pareto principle, where 80% of the work is done by 20% of the people? If you're like me, you will probably be familiar about situations whereby there are so much to be done, and so few volunteers to help share the workload. What if there is a way to increase the number of workers in any ministry? What if the harvest is plentiful, and there is an opportunity to help groom many more workers for the harvest? Will you jump at that chance?

Enters this book by Nelson Searcy. Filled with years of hard-earned experience and disappointment, Searcy shares some of the ideas and methods that he has used to increase the number of volunteers in any ministry. There are four phases to this adventure of connecting volunteers with ministry work. First, a ministry mindset must be instilled. Ministry is about servanthood and all ministers serve. If we believe in the priesthood of all believers, than every believer serves in some way. This ministry mindset and servant system is made up of 8 biblical principles.

1) Ministry means to serve
2) Serving is an act of putting the needs of others before our own needs
3) The goal of the ministry system is to help people become more like Jesus
4) You cannot become more like Jesus Christ unless you learn to be a servant
5) Serving opens people's hearts to God and therefore is part of worship
6) If people aren't serving, they aren't truly worshiping and growing in their faith
7) Mobilizing people for ministry is part of discipleship
8) The role of the pastor is to equip people for ministry.

I must say, this is probably the best book that Nelson has written. While I have been able to learn from the other books that he has written, none of them produced results as quick as this one!

I read this book in about a day and a half(Monday-Tuesday). Coincidentally, I was preaching on Unstoppable Servants on Sunday. I utilized 2 principles in the book and we doubled our volunteer ministry in 1 day! This is only the beginning of what this book has done for this 8 month old church plant. I look forward to what God has in store for us, for Nelson, and both OneChurch and The Journey Church!

I often think of myself as a match-maker for church attenders and ministry opportunities. This book gave me more suggestions for how to do that in a practical way. Pastor Searcy understands that unless people get involved, they won't stay for long. Great book for connecting volunteers as the title indicates! He hit a home run with this one.
