This volume offers a complete translation of the Samyutta Nikaya, The Connected Discourses of the Buddha, the third of the four great collections in the Sutta Pitaka of the Pali Canon. The Samyutta Nikaya consists of fifty-six chapters, each governed by a unifying theme that binds together the Buddha's suttas or discourses. The chapters are organized into five major parts.

The first, The Book with Verses, is a compilation of suttas composed largely in verse. This book ranks as one of the most inspiring compilations in the Buddhist canon, showing the Buddha in his full grandeur as the peerless "teacher of gods and humans." The other four books deal in depth with the philosophical principles and meditative structures of early Buddhism. They combine into orderly chapters all the important short discourses of the Buddha on such major topics as dependent origination, the five aggregates, the six sense bases, the seven factors of enlightenment, the Noble Eightfold Path, and the Four Noble Truths.

Among the four large Nikayas belonging to the Pali Canon, the Samyutta Nikaya serves as the repository for the many shorter suttas of the Buddha where he discloses his radical insights into the nature of reality and his unique path to spiritual emancipation. This collection, it seems, was directed mainly at those disciples who were capable of grasping the deepest dimensions of wisdom and of clarifying them for others, and also provided guidance to meditators intent on consummating their efforts with the direct realization of the ultimate truth.

The present work begins with an insightful general introduction to the Samyutta Nikaya as a whole. Each of the five parts is also provided with its own introduction, intended to guide the reader through this vast, ocean-like collection of suttas.

To further assist the reader, the translator has provided an extensive body of notes clarifying various problems concerning both the language and the mean

The Pre-Calculus of Buddhism

The Buddhist "bible" is called the Tipitaka. It's a massive collection of texts that were first compiled by the Fourth Buddhist Council in 29 BCE. It's divided into 5 nikayas (volumes). At over 2,000 pages for just this nikaya alone, the Buddha clearly had a lot more to say than the handful of inspirational quotes floating around on social media sites.

If you're new to Buddhism, and don't know which nikaya to start with, I'd recommend starting with The Dhammapada. Gil Fronsdal rendered a good translation of this text, or you can freely read it online at sites like Access to Insight or SuttaCentral. I'd also recommend purchasing the Majjhima Nikaya before the Samutta Nikaya. If the Majjhima Nikaya is the algebra of Buddhism, the Samutta Nikaya is the pre-calculus of it. The Samutta Nikaya is an incredible read, but it's arguably more challenging.

Regarding book quality—yes, the pages are thin, but they don't feel fragile or cheap, and they're glued firmly to the hard back cover. I can't imagine this book showing much wear anytime soon. I've had mine for 3 years now, and it still looks new. Admittedly though, I'm pretty light handed with my books.

Amazing to read the discourse that sets turning the wheel of truth, aka 4 noble truths in their home in ypthe scripture. The problem with learning about Buddhism in the west is that there are 1 million books written by Westerners about what Buddhism is about. It's very hard to access the original Scriptures. This book remedies this by making the Scriptures accessible, beautiful, a true gift to read.

This large chunk of the Pali canon, in its recent translation, is full of startling revelations and details and wisdom. Right up there with the Christian Bible for must-reads in a modern world. Better IMO to read this near-to-the-source translation than a lot of the stuff online about Buddhism, which has morphed itself in strange ways from this original material. The Buddha was an awesome being with superior insights, compassion, and clarity of thought, and it all still rings through in these discourses. Highly recommended.

The annotations, which are plentiful, are beyond helpful. I recommend the Nikayas to anyone who is interested in the Dhamma.
