For beginners, she acknowledges the learning curve and instructs the reader how to dive in to Blogging, Facebook, and Twitter. The book is divided into five parts:
1. Blogging: Developing Content
2. Blogging: Promoting Your Content
3. Social Networks, Facebook, Twitter and Developing Relationships
4. Social Networks, Afterthought Platforms that shouldn’t be Afterthoughts
5. Knowledge and Tools, Bringing it all together.
Sections within are divided into 2-3 pages and address a question or topic. With lots of bullets and bold font, headlines, Melson models good blog posts.
After my first read, as my knowledge and comfort level increase, I now rely on Connections as a reference tool. Edie Melson makes no assumptions about her reader’s backgrounds; she offers valid information and encouragement for anyone on the journey toward building a platform. She uses her education to help others both with this book and in her blog The Write Conversation. I also appreciate that she very willingly looked at my fledgling website and offered encouragement just as her self-described title indicates: book therapy social media coach.
Although I am familiar with facebook and blogging, there was plenty in these sections of the book to make it well worth my time in reading. For me, Twitter was the strange bird that I had been avoiding. It just didn't make sense to me. The section on Twitter made it easy to get started with Twitter, which has become a valuable part of my social media connections.
I also appreciated the informative chapters on Youtube, Pinterest, Google Plus, and Klout. Without a helpful guide, it is easy to be overwhelmed by the choices and varieties of social media. Read this book with pen in hand, as it is filled with great information to remember. I keep it handy on my desk as a quick reference.
