In this novel Jack Contino is set to solve the case of 4 men who have been executed point blank range at a late night poker game. With only the thinnest possible traits to follow our main character is led through a world in which he encounters fascinating individuals like the beautiful Maria Falcone, who balances on the edge of a knife with her tragic past on one side and the hopes of a better life on the other.
The wide variety of interesting and beautifully portrayed characters and the way the connections and relations between them are so intelligently intertwined serves as the main cord of this thrilling page-turner. This is where Marini really demonstrates his high value as a writer of exiting crime novels.
All in all, a great read for any fan of mystery based novels and one that won't take long to read due to the fact that you just can't put it aside!
Secani is tied to the Boston Mob, and is being tracked by the Boston Police in relation to a gangland killing of four men during an underworld Poker match. He shares a history with Falcone, who appears close to his heart, though the two lead rather separate and dangerous lives and, ultimately, must protect their own interests to the detriment of the other.
Contino is a dedicated and experienced cop, never afraid to face a dangerous situation and determined to protect the public interest, particularly those who struggle to protect themselves. So what will he do when he meets Falcone, who unwittingly digs herself a much bigger hole than she ever anticipates?
Author Marini does an excellent job of providing breadth and depth to his characters. His characters are particularly relatable and have you feeling a certain closeness to each and every one of them, despite the fact that they're not necessarily conventionally likeable (think cop, criminal and prostitute).
His style is a brilliant mixture of crime, mystery, intrigue and romance; each element exact in its dosage and in perfect harmony with its counterparts, producing a well-rounded, well-grounded and captivating story.
I would've liked a bit of an extended ending (and by that, I mean a little more on Maria and how things panned out for her in the end...yes, I fell hook, line and sinker for the romantic subplot of the story which, though subtle, is understandably so, as it is a crime/mobster story), but in saying that, Marini has cleverly left the door open to carry through with a sequel or two should he choose. I certainly wouldn't be complaining, and look forward to more from this author, who clearly has talent in this genre.

As I found out, this is the first book by this author but it sure gives us a great promise for the future titles. This is a great crime piece, the one you will read holding your breath.
The story is situated in the Boston in 1970s and it really depicts atmosphere and the city life of that time. If you wonder what was Boston like these days, you will surely be able to get a vivid picture from this great read.
Most enticing in this crime novel is an excellent portraying of individual characters and perfect, detailed knitting of their connections and relationships. Marini shows with this book that he has the creative energy and patience to create in vivid detail complex tread of interconnections of number of characters. You will enjoy following these links among the characters until the end of the story, waiting impatiently to come to the grand finale.
For any fan of the crime novels, this book is a great introduction for the future works of this author!
