During all these years of struggle, I have purchased about 30-40 books on pain, and while some had ideas that seemed helpful I would forget about the details of what they thought after awhile or just get lazy. Most pain books repeat the same advice... cut stress out of your life, get lots of sleep, exercise, don't eat processed food, etc. I would then almost immediately have someone hurt my feelings (stress), have my pain keep me from sleeping all night long, feel too exhausted to move and pop a couple of boxed cookies for comfort. Sigh.
Well, I am almost finished reading yet another book that is unlike anything I've ever read on the subject of pain. It just came out about a week ago and I am so hopeful and amazed! I'll be reporting on it soon, so watch out for that. The reason it is different is that it explains to you WHY pain doesn't go away and explains HOW you can retrain your body to form a different way in the way it processes information. Knowing what's going on helps because when our pain flares we can understand and use the opportunity to retrain it so that the next time things go better (and better and better). It's been a long time since I've been this motivated and hopeful. I love this book!
This process, of course, won't fix things like spinal problems, but it could very well cut down the symptoms of things like FM, MS, nerve problems, and chemical problems. Cut them so far down that they you'll only have to deal with things like sore hips, tight back, etc. and not things like temperature sensitivity, all over pain flares out of the blue, depression and other similar fibro type woes. Wouldn't that be a blessing!? I've already started seeing benefits. Buy this book!
I went to see Dr. Abaci for the first time a few months ago and spun a handful of analogies in an attempt to describe spending half my life in pain. He told me I should consider the functional pain restoration program he offers and read this book. I was only a few pages in before I realized, 'This guy gets it. $%(*&!!!! This guy actually gets it!!!"
The book is easy to read and provides a mix of case studies, the latest research on pain and its effects, exposure of the flaws in the medical system, psychoeducation, and insights/ reflections/analysis from Dr. Abaci, who also includes his own experiences with chronic pain along the way. It has been refreshingly useful for me with regard to understanding my own pain and taking steps towards relieving it, as well as, helping the people in my life who I've given it to understand my situation.
It's difficult for me to imagine anyone dealing with chronic pain or who has someone in their life dealing with it not benefiting from this book.
That said, I have been working through many of these methods for the last few years and I do find them extremely helpful. Choosing these options over pain killers has honestly given me my life back. I'm only taking a star away from my review for the simple reason that I know this book will frustrate many people who are new to these concepts and have nowhere to turn to get more help.
