"The Conscience of a Conservative" is the 1960 manifesto of Arizona senator Barry Goldwater. Goldwater was the Republican nominee for president in 1964.

The book is considered an important precursor to the Reagan Revolution.

Goldwater discusses his core political ideas in the book:

(1) The Federal government has far outreached the powers described in the Constitution and therefore should be severely cut back. For example, the Federal government should give responsibility for education back to the states.

(2) Laws that empower labor unions have gone way too far and should be replaced with "right to work" laws for the sake of the economy.

(3) Appeasement of the Soviet Union will not work and will only backfire and therefore the American strategy for the Cold War should be changed completely. For example, the USA should not recognize or negotiate with communist governments.

The quality of the narration is excellent and I managed to complete the whole book in a pleasant afternoon by the poolside.

Interesting and insightful well thought out and well spoken. Most of what is written by Mr. Goldwater is universal. Some of it is relevant to the period in which he lived.
