Susan Blackmore, author of several books on the topic of consciousness, (Conversations on Consciousness: What the Best Minds Think about the Brain, Free Will, and What It Means to Be Human, Ten Zen Questions, The Meme Machine (Popular Science), and Consciousness: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)), has performed an exceptional task here - covering the immense field of Consciousness - with this, Consciousness: A Brief Insight, her latest book.

Despite a mere 8 chapters, spanning 167 pages, Blackmore has managed to squeeze in all the heavy-hitters: David Chalmers, Daniel Dennett, Stephen Pinker, Patricia Churchland, Roger Sperry and Michael Gazzaniga - to name just a handful. Also, she has invoked all the hot-topics, for example: Dualism, Monism, Idealists, Neutral Monists, and Materialists. I would venture to say that, one could pick up this book, read it in a day or two, and be well on their way to tackling more substantial things (Philosophy of Mind, Revised Edition: A Beginner's Guide (Beginner's Guides (Oneworld)), would be a great next choice, I think). This book clearly outlines what the problems are and what the fuss over Consciousness is all about.

I absolutely loved reading this. As an undergraduate psychology student, I was very very briefly introduced to the subject of consciousness by one of my professors. This book was a great way to satisfy my curiosity. I knew almost nothing about consciousness before reading this book, but now I am an expert to everyone in all my social circles! I found myself teaching everyone around me what I learned from this book. It's a great introduction to a complicated subject.
