Great Introduction to Conservation Critical Thinking
October 12, 2015
As a Museum Studies student who is not specializing in conservation, but would like to learn more about it, I really enjoyed (and am still in the process of reading!) Barbara’s book. It’s a great introduction to the critical thinking behind the “why” and “how” of being a conservator, with special attention to what she terms as the “non-material” information and significance for conserved objects. Her vocabulary and writing style is easy to understand, and her points are relevant for other collection care positions, not just conservators- I can easily see her grid system being adapted/changed based on a role or collection needs! Full disclosure: I am not familiar with similar texts on conservation theory, so I cannot compare, and if you're looking for something about specific methods and materials, this wouldn't be the book for you.
