About the Author

James Pethokoukis is a policy analyst and the Dewitt Wallace Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, where he also writes and edits the AEIdeas blog and writes the Faster, Please! newsletter. In addition, he is an official contributor to CNBC television. A graduate of Northwestern University and the Medill School of Journalism, Pethokoukis is a 2002 Jeopardy! champion. Before joining AEI, he was the Washington columnist for Reuters Breakingviews, the opinion and commentary wing of Thomson Reuters, and the business editor and economics columnist for U.S. News & World Report. Mr. Pethokoukis has written for many publications, including Commentary, Investor’s Business Daily, National Review, the New York Times, USA Today, Washington Examiner, and the Weekly Standard. His numerous broadcast appearances include CNN, Fox Business Network, Fox News Channel, The McLaughlin Group, MSNBC, and Nightly Business Report on PBS.

Don't be put off by the word "Conservative." The author might be a Democrat from the 50s. He wants to build lots of low income housing near cities, among other things. What the author is signaling by "Conservative" is that he is not a deep-green de-growther who wants to ban space travel and hang the billionaires from lamp posts. Excellent, thought provoking futurist book.

This text completely misunderstands it's subject matter. There are entire academic traditions that the author obviously has no knowledge of. This is a text written by an analyst and not an expert.

Most non-fiction books should’ve been 30 page articles. Not this book though. It is worth reading cover to cover (and I say this as someone who teaches graduate courses on foresight and forecasting). Pethokoukis looks at how and why the optimism of 1940s and 1950s (remember Jetsons?) about the future of humanity was slowly replaced by increasing pessimism starting in late 1960s. But it is fundamentally an optimistic book because he then explores how can we reclaim that optimism and build a better future that bet on human ingenuity, free markets, and pro-growth policies.

At a time when pessimism, dystopia, and a bleak future are in vogue, Pethokoukis’ book is a shining counterpoint. Read it!
